On Monday 24th April Dr Gemma Stephenson (Industry Relationship Specialist – Energy Technologies) Jessica Jones and Sarah Lightowler from Cargill Bioindustrial visited Little Weighton Primary School in Cottingham, Yorkshire (UK) to deliver a workshop to the entire school on Sustainability and Renewable Energy. Recognising that, as an industry, whilst we are fantastic at sharing information amongst ourselves, we need to engage the wider community in terms of the transition we are enabling, the valuable work we are doing and what goals we are working towards.
Discussion with the children included the importance of science, as well as concepts including the UN Sustainable Development Goals, circularity and recycling and the need to move away from fossil-fuels towards renewable energy. The pupils learned what scientists are doing to enable the move towards renewable energy – including developing lubricants for more efficient wind turbine operation and technologies for electrification of vehicles.

During the session children took part in practical activities including “Match the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) logo and its description”, “Identify the renewable sources of energy” and “Let’s become engineers! Build your own wind turbine!”
Feedback was incredibly positive. Discussions around the environment and sustainability were very thought provoking, and when they finished the session with the question “Who wants to become a scientist?” almost every hand shot up into the air!
Gemma’s own personal quote of the day was “We take lots from the earth and give back lots of sadness, we need to work together and do more!”
