Out with the old, in with the new...

There’s something about new beginnings – I know we’re already into February but the first Lube magazine of the year always feels special. There’s a sense of anticipation and potential that comes from a renewed sense of purpose and enthusiasm. And of looking forward to new possibilities, new growth; the past forming the benchmark from which we can reflect and apply new learnings for the future.

Why would 2022 be any different? Whilst Covid and the Omicron variant are still with us, strong vaccination programmes show that we can continue to live and work alongside it. In just 2 years, the strides taken have enabled us to carry on our mostly ‘normal’ routines. It is pretty much business as usual.

All of which bodes well for Lube readers and our wider audience as we prepare for our exciting, much anticipated, industry first Sustainability Conference, taking place in London’s Institute of Directors on 25th May.

As a heavily regulated industry, one that continues to innovate despite setbacks and challenges, the lubricants sector has to put sustainability first. Our conference will help you: • Improve your knowledge of sustainability, • Learn from companies how they apply sustainability • Understand how sustainability can be applied in your company.

We have changed the original date (if nothing else, how much more adaptable has Covid made us?) but spaces are limited and tickets are selling fast. Book early to avoid disappointment.

Elsewhere, our insightful contributions this issue include an excellent, in-depth report on the impact of Covid on the European lubricant industry by Dr Valentina Serra-Holm, UEIL President. A more comprehensive and informative overview will be hard to find. Sector topics this issue are: Food Grade lubricants and Blending and this month’s Lube Tech is from Peter Greven on Sealing Compatibility of Ester Base Oils. Our regular features are here as always.

6 LUBE MAGAZINE NO.167 FEBRUARY 2022 Other news...

This is my last editorial for Lube magazine. I am leaving UKLA next month for new adventures. I have grown to love an industry I knew absolutely nothing about when I took up this position almost 4 years ago. It has offered me rare insights and opportunities to travel across continents and cities, to attend and participate in industry events, to meet and mingle, to appreciate and understand how integral lubricants are in our everyday lives. It has been a fascinating journey and one for which I will always be grateful. But it’s about the people we meet along the way.

As I write this, I realise that yet again, life has an inexplicable way of coming full circle... How fitting then that my interview this month is with industry stalwart, Thomas Norrby, Technical Manager and Senior Specialist at Nynas AB. My very first encounter as I walked along the hotel corridor to my room in San Sebastien, at Lubmat 2018, was Thomas Norrby. I was 2 weeks into my role, nervous as hell, a stranger in an alien industry; he literally took me under his wing, introduced me to the great and the good and generally helped me settle into my new professional world. I am forever indebted.

And also, thanks to my wonderful colleagues at UKLA. I’m immensely proud of what we’ve achieved in 4 years, and in particular to Laurie McHale, my media assistant, I couldn’t have done it without you!

But most of all, thank you to YOU! Our audience. For helping to make this magazine such an outstanding publication, through your editorial submissions, your advertising partnerships, your insights, contributions and ongoing support. It’s been amazing! I will miss you all.

Best wishes
