Vehicles which are passenger vehicles currently.

The use of electric engines brings its own lubrication challenges. The heat generated by an electric engine is far more than that of a conventional internal combustion engine.

There is also a greater propensity in the vehicle to generate an increase in water from this increase in electrical heat.

So the performance of any lubrication fluid will have to deal with these two specific challenges. That requires both a technical development in lubrication as well as an accompanying specification.

The core purpose of VLS won’t change in challenging mislabelled or miscommunicated products, regardless of the technology employed in the vehicle.

The role VLS plays in ensuring consumer confidence and trust is critical to the health of our UK lubricants industry.

What do you hope to achieve in your time as Chairman of VLS?

I want the organisation to build on its achievements to date and to make the transition to dealing with specifications built on new technology for vehicles irrespective of the powertrain, including Plug-In Electric Hybrid, Electric and Hydrogen vehicles.

I also see a role in VLS undertaking greater outreach with other similar programmes from Germany’s FSQ programme, to the Australian Lubricant Association’s product quality programme, API’s product quality surveys and even ATIEL’s product compliance and monitoring to ensure a joined-up and cohesive approach in sharing our experience here in the UK.

It’s important we remain transparent and independent in our service to our members which has always been the objective of VLS.
