EVENTS It’s Gold for the ELGI AGM! Andrianne Philippou, Editor, UKLA

‘Olympic Performance’ was the theme of this year’s 31st ELGI Annual General Meeting, so Athens was the perfect location for the international conference. The successful meeting brought together the five Grease Working Groups: Food Grade Lubricants, Grease Particle Evaluation, Railway Lubricants, Bio-Based Greases and Test Methods & Rheology; the sixth Group, the European REACH Grease Thickener Consortium Escrow Foundation (ERGTCEF) is an on-going project. The individual Working Group meetings preceded the official 2 day ELGI technical programme, which was formally opened by ELGI Chairman, Terry Dicken on Monday 15th April.

The WG Chairs reported their findings to a packed auditorium of more than 240 attendees before the official conference began. Key presentations included ‘mPAO Advantages in lithium, polyuria and aluminium complex greases’ by Chevron Phillips’s Ken Hope; ‘Quantum leap in the manufacturing of polyuria grease’ by Novitas Chem Solutions’ Dr Liwen Wei; ‘Grease Production, CO2

emission. A new relationship’ by Eldon’s

Andreas Dodos and Lou Honary’s ‘A comparative study of high pressure vs. low pressure grease dispensing systems for applying rail curve grease.’ (Look out for key reports from the conference in later issues of Lube).

An Athens city tour was arranged for the ‘plus ones’ who had joined their partners in Greece, whilst conference delegates were given the opportunity to go on a Cement Plant Tour at the end of the technical programme on Day 2. But the clear winner to an action-packed schedule, alongside the networking and relationship building opportunities, was the sumptuous gala dinner and delicious selection of accompanying wines, all produced at the venue, the Domaine Costa Lazaridi vineyard; the elegant winery houses a fascinating museum and cellar and lucky delegates were presented with mini olive trees and home distilled balsamic vinegar bottles as they departed. A well-deserved gold medal for the ELGI organising team.
