ith all of us becoming increas- ingly aware of environmental issues and the impact we have on the world around us, it should come as no surprise that many of the titles in this year’s round-up reflect those concerns. From “grow your own” to zero waste, there is plent to help guide us through the choices and changes we might want to make. But the practical skills of craſting and gardening are still the backbone of the category, as is the sheer joy that such activities can bring. The theme of the health and wellbeing benefits that nature and the creative act can bring is also a thread through many of these books. The home category also reflects the times, with its fair share of books emphasising a more natural and green approach to living. Alongside that, we have some sumptuous coffee-table titles to delight the eye—cele- brating the beaut that great design can

This is perfect for fans of Marie Kondo and lovers of hygge and ikigai. In a time-poor world, and with so many of us desperate to enact change in our own lives and the wider world, the Japanese philosophy of zaizen (meaning “change good”) that shows you how to make small step-by- step changes to transform your life is an appealing one. A sure bestseller.

Millie Marotta Millie Marotta’s Animal Kingdom and Millie Marotta’s Tropical
Wonderland Pocket editions Pavilion, 5th March, £4.99, PB, 9781849945905/1849945912
I’m delighted to say that the interest in colouring books has not gone away (stabilised perhaps, but very much still here). I love Millie Marotta’s intricate and idiosyncratic drawings and the imagina- tive images that fill her books. The size of these pocket editions makes them perfect to use on the go, or when you need a quick five minutes of down time.
Gardening
Huw Richards Grow your own Veg for Free DK, 5th March, £16.99, HB, 9780241411995
The stated aim of this book is to get people to join the food- growing revolution to produce no-cost, low-maintenance fruit and veg. In the current
climate this really does tick all the boxes— lower your carbon footprint by saving on packaging and food miles, save money, eat healthy and reduce, reuse, recycle. Huw Richards is a young gardener with a big online presence and his first book, Veg in One Bed, continues to sell well.
