Walliams, The Reckoning held the Mass-Market Fiction number one—Grisham’s 49th. However, only one of his titles published this decade—The Whistler, in 2017—has managed a run in the category top spot of
longer than two weeks, so he may be waiting until summer 2020 for his 50th pole in the chart. James Paterson’s latest Alex Cross title, Target, jumped 76% in volume week on week, zipping into third place. The veteran author’s solo effort held off “Captain Marvel” tie-in title Higher, Further, Faster, which blasted into fourth place in the Top 50 with 15,376 copies sold. Last week saw the release
of the film on DVD and Blu-ray, and Sainsbury’s ran a buy-one- get-a-book-free offer, which in the past has helped propel Jane Hawking’s Travelling to Infinit (the source material for Stephen Hawking biopic “The Theory of Everything”) and various “Star Continues overleaf
ith her 10th appearance in the Weekly E-Book Ranking , Santa Montefiore scores her first number one. The
Secret Hours struck first place straight out of the gate, denying David Nicholls’ Sweet Sorrow. The long-awaited Nicholls title has had to settle for runner-up place twice now: it was denied by Jo Nesbo’s Knife in the Original Fiction chart covering the same week. Montefiore’s previous five titles have gone
straight into the weekly ranking, though none has charted higher than fifth before. Her most recent title, 2018’s The Temptation of Gracie, notched up her longest run of three weeks in the top 20, so perhaps The Secret Hours will set a new record. Lisa Taddeo’s Three Women, which has been
compared to Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood, also barrelled straight into the top three. What an inter- esting time for non-fiction this is. As Adam Kay’s This is Going to Hurt contines to fly high in “e”, with fellow real-people memoirs The Secret Barrister, Amanda Brown’s The Prison Doctor and Rayor Winn’s The Salt Path also racking up appearances in a chart usually dominated by fiction, perhaps the success of Three Women—a study into the
role desire plays in the lives of three real women— marks an offshoot into a new genre: real-people biographies. Let’s not forget that Kay’s fellow début

e-book blockbuster, Heather Morris’ The Tattooist of Auschwitz, is based on the experiences of Holocaust survivor Lale Solokov. The line between fiction and narrative non-fiction bestsellers in e-book format is becoming increasingly blurred. After the previous chart was topped by Kay
and Morris in what felt like a 2018 hangover, new entries flooded into this week’s ranking. Outside the all-new top four, Deborah Moggach’s The Carer scored sixth place and Nora Roberts’ Under Currents swiped eighth. Melanie Blake’s Jackie Collins-esque The Thunder Girls also hit the top 10. Marian Keyes’ 1997-published Rachel’s Holiday
was the chart’s oldest new entry. Given the time of year, let’s hope its buyers know that the “holiday” in the title refers to, err, rehab.
