Claire Adam Golden Child Faber & Faber, 3rd, £8.99, 9780571339822
Debut Shortlisted for the Desmond Elliott Prize, this opens as Clyde comes
home from work in Trinidad to find one of his twin sons, Paul, is missing. Leaving his wife Joy and his favourite son, Peter, at home— “Paul tends to slink around—like he playing invisible, Clyde always thinks—but Peter walks with a bold step”—Clyde goes out into the warm night to look for Paul. At first he believes his son is just making trouble, but there is something darker at play here, and Adam, who was born and raised in Trinidad and Tobago, lets her story unspool with great skill. A very impressive début.

Emily Maitlis Airhead Michael Joseph, 17th, £9.99, 9781405938341
From the Miss USA beauty pageant, where she interviewed Donald Trump, to a remote Indian goat farm, where she had a fierce inner debate over whether to ask Bill Clinton about Monica Lewinsky, this is the “Newsnight” broadcaster’s memoir, giving a look behind the scenes of some of her biggest interviews, and the highs and lows of live broadcasting. “Irresistible,” said the Times. I was enthralled, finishing it entirely relieved that I have nothing to do with TV broadcasting, but in awe of those who do. “A compila- tion of her greatest hits. And boy are there many,” said the Standard.

Sarah Perry Melmoth Serpent’s Tail, 3rd, £8.99, 9781788160674
Rail advertising and a major digital campaign are planned for Perry’s new novel, already a bestseller, which Serpent’s Tail says has sold 20,000 copies in hardback. It also says that Melmoth will have a mini regional independ- ent bookshop and festival tour in October, and Perry will be writing for press around publication. The October publication feels perfect for this story of Helen Franklin, as she learns about the myth of the terrifying Melmoth, a woman dressed in black who has appeared at times of great horror and loneliness for centuries. And the cover is glorious.
Biography & memoirs
Busy Philipps This Will Only Hurt a Little Sphere, 24th, £8.99, 9780751575224
A New York Times bestseller, this is the actor and Instagram star’s collection of humorous, autobiographical essays. “Candid, painful and extremely wryly funny,” said Stylist. I have loved Philipps since my teenage obsession with “Dawson’s Creek”, with my devotion only fanned by her recent revelations about the abortion she had at the age of 15 on her talk show, “Busy Tonight”, condemning Georgia’s six-week abortion ban. Her memoir is a dip into her effervescent, open, often ridiculous life: a fasci- nating look at a journey to fame and the reality of being there.

Vintage promises an “exciting” campaign, and has a new paperback look. “Wild, thrilling,” said the Sunday Times.
