Environment & Ecology has earned more through the TCM in the first 26 weeks of 2019 than it has in its past eight full-year returns

e have emphasised non- fiction’s strength in this 2019 first-half review; a closer look

at genre performance will hammer that home. The 12 biggest-growing BookScan sub-categories in percentage terms (minimum sales: £1m) all come from Trade: Non-fiction, as do 23 of the top 25. Yes, there are far more Non-fiction categories than there are in Fiction and Children’s, but this domination is unprecedented. Given the wider discussion of climate

change, it is no surprise that Environment & Ecology (E&E) leads the percentage

growers. In fact, E&E has earned more through the TCM in the first 26 weeks of 2019 than it has in its last eight full-year returns. David Wallace-Wells’ cheery- sounding The Uninhabitable Earth: The Story of the Future (Allen Lane) led the way in value (£253,000), while teen activ- ist Greta Thunberg’s till-point hit, No One is Too Small to Make a Difference (Penguin), is tops in volume, shifting 30,000 units. Incidentally, there must be some kind of green new deal going on at Penguin Random House towers: the eight top- selling books of 2019 in the E&E category

are published by the group. House & Home (H&H) joins E&E as

the only other triple-digit percentage gainer, with the majority (52%) of the category’s sales generated by Mrs Hinch. She had a little help from Marie “bin your books” Kondo, whose 2014 title The Life- Changing Magic of Tidying (Vermilion) roared back into the charts on the back of her Netflix series. (Kondo’s overall sales leapt 232% to £558,000.) Historical & Mythological was Fiction’s high-flyer, up 31% to £12.1m; Heather Morris accounted for 15% of that total.

George R R Martin £1,736,790

257.9%

The long-awaited (and to many, disappointing) final series of “Game of Thrones” saw George R R Martin’s backlist surge— including the £65 box set, which earned £647,000. Last November’s Fire and Blood prequel, meanwhile, chipped in £424,000.

Mary Berry £1,669,180

12.3%

In Mary Berry’s “Bake- Off” heyday, her spring releases would gener- ally rack up between £2m-£3m. Quick Cooking shifted £1.3m, though it should be noted that it was still the top General Cookery title of the year by value.

17

Tom Kerridge £1,634,700

61.5%

Tom Kerridge’s totals suffer in comparison to 2018’s £3.8m-selling Lose Weight for Good. The repositioning of Kerridge’s Fresh Start (which earned £1.2m) away from diet- book territory probably ate into its sales, as did the higher £26 r.r.p.

18

Liane Moriarty £1,515,285

374.7%

The reason for Liane Moriarty’s huge sales spike is simple: she had not published a new book since 2016. But Nine Perfect Strangers’ release, timed to coincide with season two of “Big Little Lies” also helped boost her backlist.

19

Joe Wicks £1,483,011

33.3%

A half-year drop in sales by a third for Joe Wicks is down to Bluebird shuffling his publishing schedule, releasing his “2019” book, Veggie Lean in 15, before Christmas 2018—getting a festive hit—instead of his usual last week in December slot.

20

Roald Dahl £1,431,190

6.5%

Three years on from the Puffin Roald Dahl series rebrand to coincide with the centenary of his birth, and sales are still running 10%–15% above the years before the new look. Matilda was once again the top seller, shifting 33,000 copies.
