Paperback Preview October

A strong batch of thrillers are among October’s paperback offer, while gifting titles are prominent as publishers back their festive bets

Alison Flood @alisonflood

T

he nights are drawing in: it’s October in the world of paperbacks, and there is

plent to curl up with in front of a roaring fire, from Leïla Slimani’s disturbing bestseller Adele to the new Diane Seterfield, a big focus for Doubleday this autumn, and a tranche of excellent thrillers led by Lucy Foley’s The Hunting Part. On the non-fiction front, biography is particularly strong, from the memoir of a Syrian ambulance driver who built a cat sanctuary in Aleppo, to Kiese Laymon’s well-reviewed Heavy. But Neil MacGregor’s “mind- expanding” Living with the Gods stands out as a title that I’m sure will be under many a Christmas tree come December. Giſty titles are also starting

to appear in paperback, as Christmas approaches. I was particularly taken with The Mystery of the Exploding Teeth

Submissions Paperback Preview is a monthly summary of second-edition fiction and non-fiction paperbacks. Contact paperbackpreview@gmail.com. for submission guidelines; for deadlines, visit thebookseller.com/ publishing-calendar.

and Other Curiosities fom the History of Medicine, which is pleasingly gruesome, but Richard Herring’s collection of emergency conversation starters is also bound to go far.

And on a housekeeping note: can I make a plea for November submissions as soon as possible, please? Summer deadlines mean we are on a tight push to get this done; drop me an email at paperbackpreview@gmail.com if you need further details.

BookScan ratings accompanying titles are based on TCM sales (excludes e-book, export, direct, library and other sales) of the author’s most recent original work in a similar format with at least six months’ sales through Nielsen BookScan, using the notation left.

Book of the Month Colgan delivers yet another Christmas cracker

Commercial

Jenny Colgan An Island Christmas Sphere, 31st, £7.99, 9780751572070

I could not love Colgan’s gentle, heart- warming stories of life and love on a remote Scottish island more: I just wish she would write them more quickly, as they are a balm to the soul. This latest is a continuation of her series set on the

stark island of Mure: her heroine Flora is pregnant, but doesn’t know how to tell her former boss, Joel; meanwhile, refugee doctor Saif is trying to help his sons settle into their new life as Christmas approaches. Colgan’s affection for her characters and her narrative voice, brimming with humour and warmth (and skill: these books aren’t easy to write, no matter how easy she makes it look), make this a joy to read. “Nobody does cosy, get away from it all romance like Jenny Colgan... evocative and heartwarming,” says the Sunday Express, nailing the sheer pleasure of a new Colgan. Her previous title, The Endless Beach, spent three weeks

in the bestseller chart’s top 10 and has sold more than 70,000 copies through the TCM, says Sphere, adding that Colgan’s Christmas-themed books have total TCM sales of almost 240,000 copies across five books.
