He is risen: religious books increase in popularity year on year

t the halfway point of 2025, NielsenIQ BookScan’s Religion category is experi- encing something
of a Lazarus-style resurgence, with total sales ascending by three quarters of a million pounds compared with the first six months of 2024. That equates to a 6.2% rise,
meaning Religion is far outpacing the full Total Consumer Market (TCM) figure, which is marginally down (by 0.02%) for the first half of the year. Not only has Religion’s value increase come from a higher average selling price – climbing 23p from a year ago to £13.49 – but volume sales have also risen by 4.4% in the same period.

major religions happened on Easter weekend with the death of Pope Francis and the subsequent elec- tion of Pope Leo XIV – but even in the 16 weeks leading up to that, the category was up 2.7%. Sales over the following two
weeks, post-Easter, accelerated a little further, up 7% on the same fortnight in 2024; since then they have sped up even more, with weeks 19 to 26 showing a 10.1% leap against the equivalent eight weeks in 2024. It is no surprise, then, to see that
four out of the five Christianity sub-categories in NielsenIQ’s data have brought in an extra £862,404 in the first half of 2025. That more than covers the extra sales in the
