Rebecca Yarros’ romantasy titles continue to set hearts/charts a-flutter
Suzanne Collins rides the nostalgia wave with the latest addition to her YA series

Empyrean series has sold 226,725 copies to the end of March – surpassing both of the author’s previous hardbacks’ lifetime volumes – accruing sales of £3.4m, more than double the amount that 2024’s bestselling title, Nathan Anthony’s Bored of Lunch Healthy Slow Cooker, managed in the equivalent time frame. titles to sell more than 100,000 copies so far in 2025 – the second being Collins’ Hunger Games prequel, with Yarros’ Fourth Wing coming in third – while the paper- back edition of Iron Flame is just behind it with 91,460 copies sold. Yarros’ £4.9m thus far in 2025 makes her the biggest author of the year – a chunky 27.9% ahead of Julia Donaldson, who has topped the annual author list for five years running. The second book in Billingham’s Detective Miller series just misses out on this Top 50 by 29 copies. Sales reduced by 14% compared with The Last Dance – Billingham’s 2024 paperback release and the first in the series – which sold 41,936 copies in the equivalent period. The Last Dance ended up shifting 96,592 books across 2024, with nearly half of that coming in the first quarter of the year.

As ever, Donaldson’s secret is not one big blockbuster, but rather a solid backlist that performs consistently. In fact, she does not have a single title in the Top 100 of the year so far, as we have to reach down to position 103 to find her and Scheffler’s Rabbit’s Nap on 26,323 units. It is something of a Fiction year
so far, with novels taking all the slots in the top five and nine out of the first 10, with only Jamie Oliver’s Easy Air Fryer breaking the Fiction stranglehold. In 2024, not only did Nathan Anthony dominate the charts in the first quarter of the year, but two other Non-Fiction titles – James Clear’s Atomic Habits and Tim Spector’s Food for Life – made their way into the Top 10. In total, the Non-Fiction sector
has notched up sales of £139m so far in 2025 – down 3.9% compared to the same time last year. It is a loss more than made up for by Fiction – up 8.2% year-on-year, bringing in an extra £8.5m, proving it is not just Yarros doing the heavy lifting. The Children’s corner of the market has fallen slightly by 0.8% – the equivalent of £770,790, an amount that is more than covered by the phasing of Easter.
