First quarter of 2025: market flat, but Rebecca Yarros storms to the top
T
he clocks have gone forward, the sun is shining and tempera- tures are rising – so, with a quarter of 2025
passed, it feels like a good time to take the temperature of the book market. It is more or less flat year- on-year, according to data provided by Nielsen BookScan’s Total Consumer Market with sales hitting £392.2m in the first 13 weeks of 2025 – excluding the free World Book Day titles – up the barest of margins (0.1%) on the same period in 2024, the equivalent of £339,927. This data runs up to the end of
Saturday 29th March, so covers the run-up to Mother’s Day in both years. But with Easter coming two weeks later in 2025, delaying the
start of the school holidays, there is still a little bit of an issue with doing a like-for-like comparison. For instance, titles which feature the word “Easter” delivered £3.3m in the previous 12 months compared to 2025’s £1.8m – meaning that this year’s sales figure may be healthier than it initially appears. Volume sales are down 2.1% in
the same period – nearly 900,000 units – almost a third of which can be accounted for by the slower start to Easter sales. It means that this year’s average selling price is sitting at a strong £9.05 – a 17p rise on 2024 – which is perhaps no surprise, considering this year’s two biggest books so far are Rebecca Yarros’ Onyx Storm and Suzanne Collins’ Sunrise on the Reaping.
Yarros’ Onyx Storm is one of only three titles to sell more than 100,000 copies so far in 2025 – the second being Collins’ Hunger Games prequel
