What advice would you give to those looking to work in the industry? Be creative in everything you do. Don’t be afraid to show personality from your cover letter and CV to the avenues you’re exploring. Look at joining societies like the Society of Young Publishers or the Children’s Book Circle; look for small houses on Twitter; and look at scouts and editorial consultancies. Network shamelessly. You could also look to gain some hands-on experience, such as the Columbia Publishing Course, now running out of Oxford University.

Penguin Random House Children’s

Describe your role I work across a range of children’s publishing, from 5+ to Middle Grade to YA and crossover. The process begins with reading exciting new submissions and commissioning the ones right for our list, then editing with the author and managing the process through to publication.
What do you like best about your role? The moment I stumble across a diamond in the rough, and then get to work with the author to shape the finished product. I love the creativity the role allows and requires, particularly in generating new ideas. I also like the free wine at parties.
Which new projects or titles are you working on at the moment? A big focus for me at the moment is making sure the new Diary of a Wimpy Kid book publishes without a hitch. This month I am also publishing This Mortal Coil, a wonderful début YA novel by Emily Suvada. Early reader responses have been outstanding and I can’t wait for more people to see it. Wizards and Robots is the first novel by
will.i.am and futurist Brian David Johnson–it’s big, blockbuster sci-fi and comes out in January 2018. I’m also excited about the new publishing we’ve got coming from Megan Miranda, Chris Bradford, Martin Stewart, Zach King and Sally Green among many others.
What skills do you need for your role? Being able to rigorously analyse a publishing idea, as well as coming up with them, is important. Staying on top of market knowledge and being unafraid to try breaking the mould are key too. I hadn’t expected that being good at presenting would be important, but it is. An editor has to be the champion for every author they look after, so you must be able to talk passionately about any of them as required.
