HE FICTION HEATSEEKERS chart features the best- selling titles by authors who have never appeared in the Official UK Top 50 since Nielsen records began in 1998. The 2017 year-to-date Heatseek- ers number one may come as a surprise to readers, not because of the title—who can forget the “Trump bump” for dysto- pian fiction at the start of the year?—but the author. George Orwell has never charted inside the top 50 in the BookScan era, though he’s certainly not alone among classic authors—William Golding, F Scot Fitzgerald and face-of-the-£10-banknote Jane Austen all hold Heatseeker status. This just goes to show how difficult it is for a title to make it into the top 50: a concentrated marketing push is needed. Even Leo Tolstoy only made the grade when War and Peace was adapted for the BBC’s Sunday night schedule last year. Nineteen Eight-Four went all the way to the overall number one in the US, 70 years aſter it
