THE BRITISH BOOK AWARDS 2022 SHORTLISTS

W

elcome to this year’s British Book Awards shortlists supplement, and my congratulations to all of the companies, individuals and books that have made the cut. Aſter another strong year for the trade, deciding on the shortlists was an almost impossible task, with awards such as Children’s Publisher, Imprint, Independent Bookseller and Publisher as

hotly contested as they ever have been. This year sees the return of The British Book Awards as an in-person ceremony aſter a two-year interregnum. During the past few years we have learned a few things. The most obvious is how important this all is: this is a business that loves to celebrate success and acknowledge hard work. Our online ceremonies have meant the Nibbies can now be enjoyed by all, not just those in the room, and that has quickly become a core part of what we do. This year’s ceremony takes place on the evening of 23rd May at Grosvenor House, London, but will also be streamed live for those who wish to watch online, with a shorter edited version to be made available aſterwards. It remains The British Book Awards: your way. We are delighted with our new categories this year, including the Discover Book of the Year Award for underrepresented writing which offers a glimpse of further riches to come as publishers expand their brief, while the return of Individual Bookseller places booksellers at the heart of the event, as it should be. The British Book Awards are at their best when they affirm

customer choice as well as our own efforts, across both the books and trade categories. At its core the awards are about bringing the book communit together, reinforcing the connections between everyone who contributes—authors, agents, editors, designers, illustrators and booksellers. They are also energising, a shot of something strong aſter 12 months of hard work. These shortlists and the eventual winners will have a knock-on effect, influencing and galvanising the rest of the trade in the months ahead. Of course, there are more important things happening away from the books business just now, and we are working hard to ensure the awards reflect the societ and world that we inhabit. You will see some of this during the ceremony, but also in the days and weeks before and aſter the show. The ambition is to be inclusive, accessible and sustainable, affirming the right of everyone to be part of the publishing communit and furthering the role publishing must take to ensure the wellbeing of ourselves, our colleagues, our readers and the planet. This is a fantastic time to be in books, but it is also an important moment to think about how books influence the wider world, and how we can support that. As ever, I am immensely grateful to all of those who took the time to submit. Across the awards there were more than 700 entries, and I am sorry that not all of them could be publicly acknowledged. My thanks to all of our partners, sponsors, judges and the wider BBA team that help put this together. But of course, a hat-tip to those who feature on these shortlists—brilliant effort, and good luck. Perhaps, like never before, we look forward to seeing or engaging with you on the night!
