DESIGNER OF THE YEAR
OVERVIEW This award casts a light on the in-house and freelance designers whose work is often overlooked, but who are integral marketing and publicity. It is proof of the rich variety of talent in British book design that none of these eight names were on the shortlist when it was presented year.
MICAELA ALCAINO Freelancer Micaela Alcaino delivered a range of styles in 2021—from elaborately detailed, fine art-inspired covers for Jennifer Saint’s Ariadne and Jay Kristoff’s Empire of the Vampire to richly coloured, striking looks for Kirsty Capes’ Careless and Lucy Diamond’s backlist. “Anyone who manages to bag her as their cover designer is very lucky indeed,” said one author.
TOM ETHERINGTON Tom Etherington recently turned freelance designer, following six years with Penguin. Nature-led covers for James Rebanks and Lucy Jones, an in-your-face jacket for Paris Lees’ memoir, and minimalist designs for Penguin’s Green Ideas series, among other vibrant designs, displayed his variety and ability to fuse design heritage with modern sensibilities.
MARK READ SPCK’s art director Mark Read has transformed his publisher’s approach to design over the past five years. He and his team have sharpened the look and feel of the Christian publisher’s covers, internals, websites and social media, and united its visuals across a wide range of genres, including history, memoir, self-help, chil- dren’s books and its expansive, text-heavy Bibles.
JON GRAY Jon Gray has worked on covers for some of the biggest names in contemporary literature over his 20-plus years in design, but it was his work on Sally Rooney’s Beautiful World, Where Are You that most caught the eye in 2021. His flair for literary titles was evident in covers for Caleb Azumah Nelson, Rebecca Solnit and George Orwell’s backlist reissue.
RAFAELA ROMAYA Canongate art director Rafaela Romaya contributed to a superb 2021 for the indie in her 10th year there. She keeps Matt Haig’s covers fresh and impactful, and there was very striking work to enhance art books from Radiohead’s Thom Yorke and the band’s artist collaborator Stanley Donwood. “She always finds a book’s perfect visual identity,” said one grateful author.
RACHEL VALE With more than a decade under her belt as art director at Macmillan Children’s Books, Rachel Vale knows how to make a kids’ title sing. Her work on Marcus Rashford’s breakout title expertly deployed strong cover branding across market- ing assets and platforms, and her work on illustrated fiction titles—including for Sir Lenny Henry’s children’s bow—caught the eye in 2021.

CLAIRE WARD By her own admission, Claire Ward—creative director at four of HarperCollins’ fiction and non-fiction division—chases sales rather than design awards. Her expert under- standing of the mass market helped lift 37 titles with her covers into the Sunday Times’ weekly bestseller lists, spanning thrillers, romance and historical fiction, and big brands and new names alike.
GREG HEINIMANN Deputy creative director at Bloomsbury, Greg Heinimann was instrumental in the success of several books, including Patricia Lockwood’s Booker and Women’s Prize- shortlisted No One is Talking About This. His bold covers also helped Bloomsbury make a splash with new and emerg- ing authors including Lisa Taddeo, James Han Mattson and Amia Srinivasan.
