Court tells insurers to pay businesses for losses during lockdown

TENS OF thousands of small businesses could be in line for insurance payouts to compensate them for losses incurred during the first lockdown.

The Supreme Court ruled on

January 15 that retail and hospitality businesses told to close during the first national lockdown will now be able to claim for loss of income on their ‘business interruption’ policies. Around 700 types of policies from 60 insurers could be affected by the landmark ruling and it is estimated by insurance

experts that claims may amount to £900 million.

The Supreme Court ruling applies in England and Wales, but it is expected that the Financial Ombudsman Service and courts in Scotland and Northern Ireland will make use of this judgment to decide similar cases.

KBB retailers were required to close for a short period during the first lockdown,

before being told they

could open again, so this landmark ruling could mean they may have a claim under such policies and should probably seek advice on whether they would also cover the current lockdown.

With the Supreme Court upholding the appeal, policyholders can now claim for losses under their ‘business interruption’ policies.

BiKBBI welcomes rapid Covid-19 test programme for tradespeople

THE BRITISH Institute of KBB Installation (BiKBBI) has welcomed the Government’s announcement of rapid asymp- tomatic testing for Covid-19 for tradespeople and those who cannot work from home. The Government is calling on local authorities to target people who – due to the nature of their jobs – are unable to work from home and as we went to press 131 of those authorities had signed up to the scheme.

The rapid Covid testing programme will then be expanded to cover all 317 local authorities around the country. The Government said that testing asymptomatic people will help identify more positive cases of Covid-19 and ensure that those who have been infected self-isolate. This, it said, would help protect those who are the country’s vital services.

BiKBBI chief executive Damian

Walters said: “This is a great move that will reduce risk to public health, while facilitating tradespeople and their vital contribution to our economy. These small enterprises play a vital role within their communities and this testing will help control the spread of this virus.” The Government said that NHS Test and Trace would also work closely with

other government departments to scale up workforce testing. It said that so far 27,000 tests had been carried out across the public sector and that 15 large employers have already taken up the scheme across 64 sites. Tradespeople who wish to take advantage of the rapid testing scheme should visit their local authority website to arrange a test.

Communication and safety procedures vital for well-being of KBB retail staff

OPENNESS, COMMUNICATION and clear health and safety procedures were top strategies for keeping staff informed about working during the pandemic. These were the findings of a recent

survey of our kbbreview100 – a brain trust of UK KBB retailers nationwide. Nick McNally of Kitchens by Nick McNally in Edinburgh said: “We encourage a culture of openness within the business and this helps with communication.” Small teams are easier, as Stewart

Woodruff of MBK Design Studio in Maidstone, has found. He said: “It’s only me and my daughter and she treats me like I have the plague! We socially distance at all times.” Paul O’Brien, brand director at Kitchens International in Scotland, said: “Our staff are primed and clear on their responsibilities. Working from home where possible and have a firm health-and-safety directive.” Alan Margetts of the Kitchen Store, which has branches in the South, said: “We established a number of different channels in March 2020 to keep the team informed.”

Jim Geddes of JS Geddes in Scotland said all of his staff were given a six-page document on protocol regulations to ensure safe working.
