becoming more of a sanctuary for most people, which requires the space to be clean at all times. A surface that can be wiped clean makes it germ-free fast. Keeping surfaces clutter-free is also a way of increasing overall hygiene, as surfaces can be cleaned more easily. Adding more storage for both the kitchen and bathroom is a quick and easy way to keep counters clear and clean. Hygiene in the bathroom is split into
two camps: keeping the space clean and keeping yourself clean.
Starting with cleaning the space,
there are so many products that help customers get into every nook and cranny of their bathroom to clean. Wall-hung toilets and furniture help with weekly floor cleaning and rimless toilets prevent a build-up of bacteria. However, over the years, there have been several developments and a variety of new technologies that can help people have a cleaner bathroom. Using an alternative to a ceramic, such as Bette with its glazed titanium-steel, provides a glass-hard, and non-porous surface that can withstand harsh chemicals like bleach.
Other products, such as Showerwall or Fibo wall panels, create a seamless look to bathroom walls. With a grout- free solution that can be floor-to-ceiling, it minimises the areas that dirt, mould or bacteria can invade and linger in. Glazes also play an important role.
Vitra, for example, has its Vitra Shield, which is used on all of its sanitaryware and is said to reduce the build-up of lime scale, bacteria and pathogens. Margaret Talbot, marketing manager for Vitra, says: “Cleanliness is very much in our thoughts and products that offer hygienic benefits, and easy cleaning, will be a powerful feature in 2021. slows the growth of bacteria.” There have been several products, such as the shower toilet, that have seen a boom in popularity over the past year that had previously been the preserve of wealthy individuals or commercial applications.

People have discovered that smart technology in the bathroom is not just about creating a luxurious space, but can play a role in improving hygiene. Mike Bennett, consumer marketing manager at Geberit, says: “With the rise of the smart home, we were already seeing an increase in the popularity of touchless technology, such as sensor-activated flush plates and taps, and revolutionary innovations like shower toilets, which offer the consumer a host of both hygiene and
well-being benefits. “However, thanks to the events of 2020, people are more aware than ever of the importance of hygiene in the home, especially in those areas frequently used by guests, such as the kitchen and bathroom. It is now not enough to simply keep on top of housework – homes should be designed
to elevate hygiene and
increase cleanliness, whether that’s through technology, materials or design features.” With so many advances in kitchen, bathroom and appliance technology, it’s fair to say that designers are spoilt for choice for exciting product options to recommend to clients looking to maximise hygiene throughout their homes.
