The planning is so important.” Both Cambridgeshire Bathrooms stores are on retail parks and they make sure staff engage with customers as soon as they come through the door. Customers have often researched the company through their website and are usually ready to sit down with a designer and go through their ideas.
Commitment Designers use the Virtual Worlds 3D design software and charge a £75 fee, which is then taken off the final order. Cardwell explains: “I think that the design charge gives a commitment from the customer. We are always upfront and say that the design charge is refunded against their order. I think that it gives value to what we are doing with the on-site survey and personal design service.”

For the new showroom, he ran a newspaper print campaign that ran for several weeks and recruited his children to post leaflets around local houses. Google Ad Words is also an area they have invested in. It is helpful that they are called Cambridgeshire Bathrooms, as that is a likely search term for prospective clients, so by name alone, it bolsters their presence online. Cardwell jokes: “We learnt that a long time ago when choosing names. Be simple: where are you and what do you do.” The Sawston showroom is deceptively large. As you walk through the door, you are greeted with what feels like a never-ending run of displays. The variation of styles of bathrooms is impressive. It can show the full range of creativity of its designers, from timeless yet straightforward designs in the front bays to a high-end freestanding Victoria and Albert area.
