Burbidge & Son: a modern approach to classic kitche ns

Q & A

Q: So, what is Kitchen Makers? A: For 150 years my family have been making timber products and have enjoyed longevity and business success because of our ability to continuously innovate, developing successful products and keeping one step ahead of market trends. The launch of Kitchen Makers marks our latest signifi cant move, as for the fi rst time we’re offering a complete kitchen. We’ve sought to ensure the Kitchen Makers range is distinctive and considered; contemporary interpretations of classic designs that are of premium quality with a high level of detailing. To complement the design credentials of the range, we’ve made certain that retailer support is fi rst class in terms of customer service and technical support, plus we’ve created a compelling marketing package for the brand.

Q: How did the Kitchen Makers brand come about? A: We identifi ed an opportunity within the market for a high-quality, in-frame timber kitchen supplied as a complete product. At the same time, a number of our key bathroom accounts, who were enjoying great success selling our timber bathroom units, were telling us they really wanted Burbidge to expand our offer with high-specifi cation kitchens. Recognising this gap, we set about developing a kitchen brand that chimes with our heritage, expertise and reputation for quality and design authenticity.

Q: What can retailers expect from a Kitchen Makers product? A: Alderley, Haddon and Somerton are three timeless timber in-frame painted

kitchens available in a curated palette of 16 colours. We also offer bespoke colour options, a wide range of standard cabinets sizes and an extensive choice of accessories.

The availability of made-to-measure cabinets allows our retailers to tailor kitchen designs to overcome diffi cult room shapes or to create unique units – exactly to the client’s requirements. We want to ensure a premium look throughout, so our cabinets are constructed from veneered oak ply and feature timber drawer boxes. Our 10-year guarantee shows we fully trust in the Kitchen Makers product.

Q: Having made signifi cant investment in manufacturing equipment and IT systems, coupled with your commitment to a highly- skilled workforce, how does this affect the kitchens you offer? A: We feel very confi dent in our ability to produce beautiful kitchens of outstanding quality. By investing in the best production machinery available, using the fi nest quality and most appropriate materials for construction, and ensuring we have the necessary skills to hand, means that we’re making the best possible product. We produce all the cabinetry in our workshops, putting us in complete control of quality and consistency.

Q: Trust in the quality of the product is key for retailers, especially those operating in the higher end of the market. But so, too, is a high level of service and support. How does Burbidge work with its retailers? A: We take a collaborative approach

The Haddon Kitchen

With an established reputation for the supply of components, Burbidge & Son is expanding its product portfolio with the launch of Kitchen Makers - a standalone luxury brand which sees the manufacture of complete kitchens. We ask managing director, Ben Burbidge, to tell us more…

with our retailers. Service is so important and we want to make sure every kitchen order runs smoothly. Initially, all accounts are managed by Tom Bruck, who is the Kitchen Makers key account manager. As the main point of contact for new accounts, he assists retailers to quickly become profi cient in ordering the kitchens and understanding our processes. In addition, we offer an order- checking service, technical support and a premium, two-person delivery service. Our monthly Kitchen Makers workshop days, held at Burbidge headquarters, give kitchen designers the opportunity to view our product, see it being manufactured at our production facility, as well as being able to meet the team and develop their product knowledge.

Q: What would you say to a retailer looking to appeal to consumers seeking a high-quality, aspirational, and bespoke-style kitchen? A: As a UK manufacturer, we provide a modern approach to the manufacture and supply of classic kitchens. We are looking for a selective number of partners who enjoy excellent levels of service from, say, a German supplier, but recognise the growing trend for British, classically- styled, in-frame kitchens.
