Francesca Seden looks at some products and trends that may appeal to a new generation of home diners
sticking. More than half of Brits polled in 2016 said they’d rather stay at home and watch TV or entertain friends, rather than heading out to bars and restaurants.

This number rises further when talking to cash- strapped millennials who would rather sit in and watch Netfl ix and chill, saving their pennies to get on the property ladder. Homeowners, meanwhile, are investing in
their
properties to make them as comfortable as they can afford – a centre of Hygge and harmony, and a kitchen with a food preparation area that functions well and looks beautiful is crucial to achieving this.

Everything and the kitchen sink Once purely used as a place to wash up or rinse your veg, the kitchen sink – the heart of the kitchen’s wet zone – is now much more, with the menial task of washing up delegated to the dishwasher. Incorporated into an island, along with storage for utensils and recycling/compost bins, it’s possible to have a self-contained food preparation area that’s
taying in is the new going out’ is a phrase that we’ve been hearing for a few years now and it’s seemingly a trend that is
easy to navigate and also a focal point for the room. As a consequence, the design of the once-humble stainless steel or ceramic sink has grown much bolder, with unusual metallic fi nishes like copper, gunmetal and gold, as well as granite fi nishes gaining real traction. “With everything now on show,” adds Reginox UK sales and marketing director Dave Mayer, “demand has risen for designs that combine aesthetics with functionality and, as a result, homeowners are increasingly seeking out more aesthetically ‘sexy’ sinks and taps that offer a strong fusion of form and function. The wet zone needs to work well and use space intelligently, but it also needs to look stunning.” As well as looking great, the sink is still perhaps the most-used element in the kitchen, so has to be durable and practical. Although new metallic fi nishes are doing well, stainless steel and ceramic Belfast sinks remain the most popular for their timeless appeal. And along with the PVD fi nishes that make metallic tones possible, manufacturers are also constantly innovating to make their sinks more hygienic, with special glazes that can reduce surface bacterial build-up by up to 99.9% in the case of Caple’s Hygiene fi nish.
