This is what independent retail is all about – longevity, reputation, loyalty, fantastic team, a great long-term relationship with customers and, of course, a partnership with their suppliers. In particular, Gould says, the relationship with NEFF has not only been one of the longest-running they’ve had, it’s also one of the most valuable. “I’m not sure exactly when we started that relationship, because I was still out fitting at that point, so whether they came to us or we got in touch with them, I’m not sure, all I know is that it was a long time ago! “There’s ups and downs, of course, and we all know it’s very challenging at the moment, but if we look at that partnership across the decades it’s been hugely rewarding and supportive – and I do believe that the support should go both ways.
“When I look at the competition, they’re either much lower in the market or much higher and NEFF sits in the sweet spot that’s perfect for our customers –- great products at the

right price with the right support.” And, ultimately, Gauld wants to sell products that serve his customers and give them what they want and a bit more besides. For him, NEFF is that brand.
“Most of our customers know and trust the brand, it’s as simple as that,” he says. “And with something as amazing as the Slide & Hide, they’ve seen it on TV and it virtually sells itself. “I would definitely say that if you look back over all the years we’ve worked together, it’s been great and while the past couple of years have been difficult in terms of supply and availability, for decades they’ve given us great service and they’ve always found a way to help, or smooth things over, and they have always looked after us.

“So while I’m not saying that there aren’t any current issues, there’s no question that I still want NEFF in my showroom. That must tell you something, mustn’t it? And where else would you go? Everyone else is much the same with no one really standing out, so we’re still selling NEFF and there are no plans to move!”
Drumoak Kitchens and NEFF share their 50th birthday, and the cooking brand leant its support to a big showroom event to mark the occasion – as it does with so many of its retail partners across the country. “NEFF were so helpful,” Gauld says.
“We invited dozens of our most loyal customers to a very special party and NEFF gave us an amazing home economist who cooked and made food for all our guests. They were real VIPs as far as we were concerned and they’ve had many projects from us over the years, so it was very important that we looked after them properly and we couldn’t have done it without NEFF’s help.”

“There’s a very strong work ethic here, and a desire to just do things properly in a way that pleases the customers. I keep all the clients’ emails, and most always refer to how we go the extra mile, have real attention to detail and really push to do the best possible job and maybe that’s in the DNA up here. Maybe it’s because it’s a small place where word spreads quickly – both good and bad – and so our reputation is everything to us. “That’s why we want to work with suppliers who understand that and we can have that long-term relationship with. We’ve been with NEFF for decades and they’re part of this business in that sense.”
Retailers like Drumoak Kitchens need strong brands to back up that reputation and, clearly, NEFF has been a huge part of their history and success. That relationship is built on mutual respect and a willingness to take the rough with the smooth and focus on the long-term – a policy that has served so many independent retailers so well for 50 years.
