Mil CIV Tips for the transitioning military helicopter pilot

2022 HAI MIL2CIV HIGHLIGHTS 2

The Military to Civilian Transition Workshop at HAI’s Heli-Expo 2022 was a great success! The workshop was held on the first day of the world’s largest vertical aviation conference and trade show. A “hats off” to workshop sponsor JSfirm.com!

We would like to give a smart salute to everyone who attended – and a special thanks to all the mentors who volunteered their time and expertise to the attendees. The Mil2Civ mentors are pilots and mechanics who represent every corner of the helicopter industry: air ambulance

(HAA), flight training, firefighting, oil & gas, utility, aircraft manufacturers, tours, corporate, and more. This year we were fortunate to also have a human resources expert from the oil & gas industry give a presentation on resumes, interviews, and other topics to help transitioning military folks prepare for the world of civil/commercial aviation.

The workshop is a six-hour event. Each hour contains two to three presentations, followed by a 20-minute break for networking and meeting with the mentors. These 20-minute breaks are

where the magic happens. Connections are made, business cards are exchanged, questions are answered and the building of a new network – outside of the military – begins. The foundation of the workshop is education and networking. It’s no surprise that most of the mentors started their civilian helicopter journey at a past Mil2Civ workshop and are now paying it forward.

Several major commercial helicopter company recruiters also were present – all looking for pilots and mechanics to hire! This was a fantastic opportunity for all

in attendance, and several people walked away with an interview and potential job.

If you plan to transition out of the military in the near future or even the next few years, please join us and begin your future with some people who want to help. Start planning now for the Military to Civilian Transition Workshop at HAI’s next Heli-Expo. Heli-Expo 2023 is scheduled for March 6–9 in Atlanta, Georgia, and we hope to see you there!
