We recently visited a reception class at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School in Pontefract who tested some of our augmented reality books and colouring sheets.

Here’s how they got on…

Stanley the Seahorse Augmented Reality Book

Using this book worked well with a small group of five or six children who could all crowd round the iPad screen to see the characters in the book spring to life. It took the first couple of pages for the children to really understand and engage with the resource, but once they did there were lots of ‘wow’s’ as they rushed round to see. They really enjoyed seeing the characters to come life.

It’s a great resource for encouraging reluctant readers to look and listen to stories, and would be even better if it was also expanded into more books, perhaps some traditional tales such as Goldilocks and The Three Bears or The Three Little Pigs.

This activity could work well with larger groups, as they can all colour in their own sheets and then take turns with the iPad to bring them to life. We used the under the sea themed colouring sheets to tie in with the book they had just read. The children engaged well with this activity and it was a good way to encourage mark making skills. It was also great to see the children enjoy sharing their creations with others – being proud of their work as everyone gathered round to have a look.

The group concentrated really well throughout both activities, and clearly had a lot of fun using resources that were a bit different to usual.
