Open-ended activities with loose parts

Playing with open-ended materials that have a multitude of uses and boundless possibilities, such as loose parts, can help develop imagination, creativity and critical thinking. They can be used in so many ways and as there is often no shelf life, you can use the same materials across a wide range of different ages.

With a child’s limitless imagination, they can create their own make-believe forts, dens, cars, and costumes from everyday open-ended materials found within their reach. Children often work better together in groups developing softer social skills such as empathy, cooperation, problem solving, and leadership through their make-believe play.

Loose Parts Pictures

We removed the glass from some old picture frames, provided a selection of natural materials and let the children get to work creating their very own masterpieces. They loved making their own natural “art gallery” and using the frames really helped them focus their attention and allowed them to thoroughly investigate the materials they were using.

What you’ll need

• Reused picture frames • Recycled fabrics • Natural materials (from our wide selection at YPO or scavenged from your outdoor walks)
