LITERACY FUN MAKING
OUTDOORS
Storytelling is a big part of our childhood. As our little learners begin to learn their ABCs, using spaces outdoors reduces stress levels, creates a safe open
environment and doesn’t limit the need to rush learning like a classroom would. Practicing
their reading and writing skills outdoors can reinforce what is learnt indoors, especially for
those children who learn better from movement and touch. It can also stimulate the
imagination and enhances a child’s ability to understand what they are learning.
Inspector Phonics
Phonics is one of the most effective ways of teaching children to read. We chose to use one of our play trays and our lovely, soft sand but this is a great activity that you can try outdoors in the garden on a dry, sunny day. Ask your little inspectors to choose a jumbo magnifying glass as they are on a mission to find the corresponding phonic sounds with the images that you have hidden in the sand.
