PSHCE subject leader Caitlin Wright – Copley Junior School
PSHCE and pupil mentoring schemes at Copley Junior School, Doncaster, are central to the school’s drive to support pupils’ personal development, emotional health and wellbeing and their understanding about how to keep safe.
Caitlin Wright, PSHCE subject leader, describes their approach:
At Copley Junior School, we believe in providing children with exciting, creative and meaningful learning experiences, which build their enthusiasm for learning and help them to grow and develop not only academically but spiritually, socially, emotionally, physically and morally too. Our approach to Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education (PSHCE) informs not only dedicated teaching sessions but the whole of the curriculum and all aspects of school life. We aim to give our pupils the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to enable them to lead confident, healthy, independent lives and become informed active citizens.
At Copley Junior School, we believe in developing the ‘whole child’. Essential to this is the importance placed upon PSHCE and the emotional health and wellbeing of each and every one of our children.
Our PSHCE scheme of work is delivered through different units of study in each year group to ensure a comprehensive and structured spiral curriculum through school. Areas of study in Year 3 encourage children to reflect upon themselves and their personal development and this progresses to pupils in Year 6 considering themselves as citizens of the world.
Our Copley Junior ‘Learner Values’ support our school ethos of helping children to develop important life skills and are embedded throughout our school and our curriculum. Our Learner Values (respect, perseverance, self–belief, independence, creativity, team work and friendship) were chosen by a whole school pupil vote as well as discussions with our teaching team, governors and Parent Forum.

Our pupil Anti–Bullying Ambassador Team leads and promotes anti– bullying awareness and positive behaviour messages through school. Their work has had great impact and has been recognised with the national honour of the Diana Award. During national Anti–Bullying Week and E–Safety Week an interactive magic show, competitions and activities in each class helped children learn about the importance of friendship, how to stand up to any bullying and how to be safe online.
