Unlocking insights and making sense of unstructured data Within every care home, a massive amount of information is generated daily. A staggering 18 million data points (care records) are uploaded onto Nourish daily, and that includes unstructured data such as written notes and photographs. Those notes are a valuable source of data. Historically, it has been challenging to analyse this data effectively, making it difficult to identify hidden patterns and use insights to enhance care. AI has unlocked the potential to find hidden insights and the fact that it can also sift through unstructured data makes it more powerful than ever. Going back to the example of wounds,


caregivers take pictures of those wounds every day, so we can look at things like the progression of wounds and flag anything unusual or illuminating. This allows us to see the complete picture, catch potential problems much earlier, and provide more precise, responsive care. For example, a decrease in the frequency of written notes might signal a need for increased staff support or indicate a potential communication issue, while a rise in wound-related images could alert the team to a specific area needing attention. This granular data analysis enables us to anticipate and address needs before they escalate into a crisis.


Empowering caregivers AI plays a vital role in supporting and empowering caregivers. By automating many tedious administrative tasks – charting, scheduling, documentation – we free up their valuable time, allowing them to focus on what truly matters: connecting with residents, providing compassionate care, and building meaningful relationships. This is not just about improving efficiency; it is about creating a more supportive and sustainable work environment, promoting higher job satisfaction, and reducing burnout among care professionals. ‘Less time on paperwork, more time with residents’ is a sentiment that resonates deeply within our commitment to improving the caregiver experience and promoting a culture of greater wellbeing.

n Improved caregiver wellbeing: AI frees up valuable time for caregivers, allowing them to focus on building relationships and providing more compassionate, person-centred care.


n Improved operational efficiency and sustainability: AI helps optimise resource allocation, streamline administrative processes, and ensure the long-term sustainability of care homes.


AI: the new Excel spreadsheet? When I think about mining data, I look at it through a value lens. Right now, I am considering use cases and applications where we can use data, analytics, and AI. We are trying to turbocharge our AI strategy. I am asking, ‘What are the value drivers for our company? For our clients? For the wider health service? What should it look like and what tools should we be using?’ We are setting out to ensure that our clients are more empowered. AI is not going to take over adult social care – it is simply a tool that everyone will use. It is almost the new Excel spreadsheet. I love how AI has been democratised so


that anyone can use and benefit from it. It changes how we work every day, across all


industries, as well as in adult social care. I have talked about how AI can be used in the care home environment, but we also want to make sure that the AI-driven insights we get are transformational, not just for our clients, but for the wider health system, too. That is one of the most exciting aspects of this new role for me. I have worked in US healthcare, where data has been used effectively to predict risk and promote appropriate care delivery, and since then the technology has progressed rapidly, so there is much more it can do. It is exciting to be at a company that is leading the innovation in this country. In previous jobs, I have created machine learning models, created solutions leveraging AI, and I have helped clients use the newer, powerful capabilities around generative AI. For the past seven years, as a consultant, I have focused on lots of different sectors and feel that Nourish is the perfect company for me to use all my technical knowledge and cross-sector experience. We support 385,000 people receiving care, and with such a large share of the market, the insights, trends, and patterns we see from our data will likely apply across the whole of the UK. I am going to be focused on mining that data to get powerful insights which can be actionable for anyone delivering adult social care.
