New care home survey shows it’s NOT grim up North

When it comes to the best places in the UK for elderly care, Sunderland, Newcastle, Durham, and Barnsley recently came top in a Lottie.org survey.

The care homes comparison site ranked cities across Britain according to a list of key metrics, including not only the price and quality of the homes themselves, but also their proximity to local hospitals and parks, and even whether local restaurants were up to scratch.

The clear winner was Sunderland, which

scored an impressive 8.4 out of ten. At the bottom of the pile, however, was Swindon, with the Wiltshire town scoring a worrying 2.53 out of ten, having been dragged down by high prices and poor proximity of homes to local hospitals.

According to Lottie.org CEO and co- founder Chris Donnelly: “With an increasingly ageing population, the need for high-quality elderly care in the UK is greater than ever before. A study from the Office of National Statistics predicts that the number of people aged 85 or over is likely to treble by 2066, suggesting that this issue will become even more prevalent as the years go by. “While the need for high-calibre care homes cannot be overstated, good elderly care is about more than just nursing and accommodation, with everything from outdoor commutes to social interactions playing an integral role in someone’s quality of life.”

Care UK announces two new homes for 2023

Not content with opening almost sixty new care homes in the past twelve years, Care UK has made a start on two more – including a new build in Cardiff. The Cardiff home, scheduled to open in the summer of 2023, is being constructed by Carter Lauren Construction. It will offer residential, nursing, and specialist dementia care for up to 75 older people, creating over 80 new jobs.

The home will include facilities such as a cinema, café, and hair salon. Landscaped outdoor space will boast sensory gardens and water features. Care UK’s second project, scheduled for the autumn of 2023, is being realised by S.A.C Construction in Thame, and will provide a home for 68 older people and create 77 new jobs. A salon, cinema, and space for hobby and leisure activities are promised.

Joshua Jones, Care UK’s development

the sale, added: “We were able to target the key acquirers for Care Without Compromise through our depth of experience in the sector and generated multiple bids for the directors’ consideration. We are delighted to achieve a successful outcome for the directors and have no doubt that Choice Care will continue to deliver the very best care. “The level of interest generated in this business underlines the strength of investor demand for specialist care services with a wide variety of buyer groups seeking to expand their portfolios throughout the UK.”

project manager, said: “At Care UK we take great pride in the build quality, layout, and design of each individual home, as these factors can greatly impact the everyday experiences of those living in a care environment. Our new care homes will live up to these standards and will provide a quality home for older people from the local communities and beyond.” Jon Folkes, development project manager at Carter Lauren commented: “Construction is off to a great start, and we are on track to complete the scheme by late summer 2023. As a developer of best- in-class care homes we’re thrilled to be working with Care UK on the brand-new Cardiff care home for the people of the city and the surrounding area. We’re already looking forward to reaching our next milestone in the coming months.” Director at S.A.C.
