Response to Ukraine crisis gives new meaning to “care” homes
Proving that everybody has a part to play in times of crisis, UK care homes are opening their doors and offering emergency accommodation to refugees arriving from besieged Ukraine. A care home operator in Sussex, Healthcare Management Solutions, has already made 150 rooms available across its properties, with Chief Executive Tony Stein explaining that “… it starts with having facilities like this that we can utilise and then we worry about how we fund it. Ultimately I’m sure we’re going to end up with Ukrainians living in the UK that we are helping, people that are fleeing war. The start point is where are they going to live? If we can get over that hurdle then we can get over how we fund it, that’s the secondary issue.” With some two million people having

& Foster, and Savista Developments - won Best Exterior Space, and Bruce Lodge (operated in Stockport by Borough Care Ltd and designed by DASH Architecture) took away the trophy for Best Regeneration Project. Finally, Eden Court in London, operated by Cinnamon Luxury Care, and its designers PRC Group, Catalyst Interiors and Lucy & Co Construction, won Best Independent Living Scheme, while the Innovation & Environmental award was won by Brook House in Towester, which is run by Caring Homes Group and was designed by Pozzoni Architects, Orchard Interiors, and Wildgoose Construction.
provider, which specialises in dementia care, was presented with the ‘Care Employer Award’ at the Awards on Friday 18 March, which took place at the ICC in Birmingham. Organisers found that Vida had demonstrated a sustained track record of delivering good quality care, set an example of leadership best practice, showed a willingness to change to meet new priorities, and was committed to providing learning and development activities.
Vida Healthcare managing director
James Rycroft said: “Staff and carers are the lifeblood of the social care sector, and without their hard work and dedication we simply wouldn’t be able to deliver the care that is needed by vulnerable people across the UK. We couldn’t have won this award without them and I’m eternally grateful for the ongoing commitment of everyone at Vida to provide the best possible care to our residents. “We’ve put in place a range of
strict post-Brexit visa requirements, which have attracted criticism. For its part, the Government said that “We announced a new sponsorship route which will allow Ukrainians with no family ties to the UK to be sponsored to come to the UK. This is alongside our Ukraine Family Scheme, which has already seen thousands of people apply, as well as changes to visas so that people can stay in the UK safely.”
With no end to the war currently in sight, other care home providers seem set to follow Healthcare Management’s lead.

initiatives to ensure we provide the same level of support to our staff as they show to our residents. From our staff summer party which will be happening later this year, to our specialist training platform, Vida Academy, which promotes lifelong learning across the organisation and establishes staff as dementia ambassadors, we’re always trying to think of new ways to support staff.” Vida Healthcare opened its third home, Vida Court, in Harrogate, in January. The new home (which we covered in the January issue of The Care Home Environment) specialises in caring for residents living with dementia, and includes a cinema, florist, and coffee shop.
