IFHE CONGRESS 2024 REVIEW

Technological innovation in facility management A core focus for this year was on the integration of digital technologies and artificial intelligence in facility management. Sessions showcased advancements in smart building automation, digital twins, and the Internet of Things (IoT), all geared towards enhancing operational efficiency and patient outcomes. Delegates explored practical applications like predictive maintenance systems and AI-driven energy management solutions, both of which offer substantial cost savings and environmental benefits.

Sustainable healthcare design and construction Sustainability was a prominent theme, with numerous sessions dedicated to green building practices, decarbonisation,

A core focus was on the integration of AI in facility management

and waste reduction. Industry experts presented case studies on healthcare facilities reducing their carbon footprints through renewable energy, sustainable materials, and circular economy principles. These discussions emphasised the need for resilience in healthcare design, particularly considering the increasing impacts of climate change on healthcare facilities worldwide.

Global Healthcare Energy Awards and Building Awards IFHE celebrated excellence through the Global Healthcare Energy Awards and the IFHE International Building Award. This year’s Energy Award went to Mediclinic Lephalale in South Africa for its innovative energy efficiency project, achieving a remarkable 59 per cent reduction in facility energy usage. The Building Award was presented to Netcare Alberton and Mediclinic Stellenbosch who set new standards for sustainable healthcare architecture in the region.

Networking and collaborative opportunities IFHE 2024 fostered global collaboration, providing an invaluable platform for delegates to share challenges, insights,

and best practices. These sessions reinforced IFHE’s role as a global connector, facilitating knowledge sharing among healthcare engineering professionals.

Looking ahead: IFHE 2026 in New Orleans, USA In the closing session, the IFHE Executive Committee announced that the 2026 IFHE Congress will take place in New Orleans, USA, hosted by the Association of Medical Facility Professionals (AMFP). With a theme centred on ‘resilience and recovery in healthcare infrastructure’, IFHE 2026 promises to build on the success of this year’s event, aiming to advance healthcare engineering practices to meet global challenges.

Conclusion The 2024 IFHE Congress was a resounding success, leaving attendees inspired and equipped to implement innovative solutions in their own healthcare facilities. As global healthcare demands increase and environmental pressures intensify, IFHE’s worldwide community remains committed to advancing healthcare engineering for a healthier, more sustainable future.
