INTEGRATED THEATRES

also includes a variety of accessories that can be constructed to customised specifications.

Controlling the theatre environment

Theatre control panels (TCP) combine the controls of an operating theatre into a single interface panel for lighting, temperature and humidity, ventilation and critical alarms. They provide clinical teams with a simple and intuitive method of controlling the entire theatre environment at the touch of a fingertip. The TCPs are manufactured in- house to exact customer specifications, with every panel programmed and configured to specific needs. The TCPs are designed to be

straightforward to install and easy to re-programme, to accommodate future equipment changes. Supplied in a choice of size, finish, colour, clock type, optional integrated keyboard and PACS, TCPs can accommodate bespoke add-ons, such as integrated music and window blind controls. A clinical priority in every hospital is infection prevention and control, and the control panels are designed for efficient cleaning. They incorporate an antimicrobial finish that minimises the risk of contamination and the spread of harmful bacteria.

medical IT systems installed and maintained by Bender UK.

The surgical lights have replaced ageing halogen lights at operating theatres at the Trust’s three hospitals; Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro, West Cornwall Hospital in Penzance and St Michaels’s Hospital in Hayle, as part of a rolling programme to update facilities.

Theatre staff were able to trial a surgical light prior to their placing the orders, and they were very pleased with the performance. At the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro, a tight schedule for refurbishing trauma theatres 6 and 7 also provided an opportunity for upgrading the medical IT system to provide greater resilience, and installing the ATICS rapid auto changeover system to remove a single point of failure in the uninterruptible power supply.

South Lakes Birth Centre at Furness General Hospital

Merivaara Q-Flow surgical lighting is installed in two operating theatres at the £12 million maternity unit project within Furness General Hospital in Cumbria. South Lakes Birth Centre is also equipped with Bender’s critical care power systems and surgical equipment including pendants and touch screen surgeon’s control panels.

Group 2 medical locations are protected by Bender medical IT/IPS and UPS systems combined with the ATICS changeover and monitoring device which provides protection against failure of the electrical supply in critical areas.

The installation is the latest in a series of projects at Furness General Hospital including refurbishing existing operating theatres.

Beaumont Hospital in Dublin

The supply, installation and commissioning of new Merivaara Q-Flow LED surgical lighting at the Beaumont Hospital in Dublin and at the South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital in Cork are two recent projects for Bender UK in the Republic of Ireland. The company was appointed to provide the upgrade to all 12 operating theatres at the Beaumont with theatre control panels and Q-Flow operating lights as part of that programme. The upgrade of two of theatres at South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital with Q-Flow operating lights followed successful trials of the lights on site. Based on feedback from the clinical team, the Beaumont Group of hospitals is also installing Q-Flow operating lights into St Joseph’s Hospital, Raheny.

Chase Farm Hospital - Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust group

Operating theatres and critical care areas at the Chase Farm Hospital in Enfield are equipped with Merivaara LED surgical lighting, touch screen theatre control panels, medical IT/IPS power systems, and uninterruptible power supplies from Bender UK.

The 20,000m2 Chase Farm Hospital

is part of the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust group. It has eight operating theatres, a dedicated day surgery area, and 50 surgical in-patient beds. Chase Farm has been

designed to provide world class facilities and will be the location for most of the Royal Free London’s planned surgery. A key element in the design concept for the new hospital is using theatres in new and innovative ways. The eight main operating theatres include four ‘barn theatres’ specifically designed for orthopaedic work. The barn theatres’ incorporate open-plan designs of the main surgical area, where each patient is treated in a dedicated space alongside the next patient, with a specialised air canopy over each station to prevent the spread of infection.
