Staff at all levels should have a good general knowledge of the anatomy of flexible endoscopes, the basic principles of decontamination, the basic elements of infection prevention and control, microbiology and process chemicals, and the potential hazards posed by these.10 Holding reprocessing staff accountable is
an easy way to associate blame, but this does little to mitigate the issues concerned with inadequate reprocessing. Instead, a back- to-basics approach could be an ideal way to educate staff and ensure that protocols are being followed correctly. Monthly sessions could be held within the endoscopy unit and time should be allocated to allow all staff to access them. Manufacturers should support these training sessions and should also be on hand to help prevent any gaps in knowledge. Innovation is required for non-paper IFUs,
which may be difficult to access in procedural environments. QR codes could be utilised to assist staff and could also be used in training methods. A QR code can be linked to a training video or IFU that is available to all staff members and can easily be accessed with a Smartphone or tablet. Manufacturers and institutions should also be working together to create standardised IFUs that are approved and certified by healthcare providers, manufacturers, and training institutions.
