3. The Training Conference David Mulvey will Chair the stage. David’s Medical Engineering

experience goes back 35 years. Working in the commercial sector with S&W, Vickers Medical and his own company Artemis Medical, David held roles of Senior Engineer, Technical


Training Manager and Technical Director. In the morning, he will present how engineers


may become more commercially astute; a very important skill in considering the tight budgets NHS Trusts are operating with. David has often been said to be “Poacher come Game Keeper”. In today’s NHS, controlling costs and ensuring quality are among the most important roles of every Biomedical Engineer, and David has been at the forefront of sharing his experience in this area. He will then be joined by David Dewar, who will be presenting on the ‘Intricacies of Electrosurgery’. In the afternoon, Dave Mulvey will continue with a further presentation on the respiratory system and how it technically links the mechanical ventilation.


4. The Procurement Conference David Lawson is Director of Medical Technology at the Department of Health and Social Care. In this role, Mr Lawson is the Government policy lead for Medical Technology with responsibility for the implementation of the Government’s inaugural Medical

Technology Strategy, published February 2023. Key initiatives include the ‘Design for Life’


programme, to promote circular economy; Value Based Procurement Methodology, to be adopted for MedTech procurement; NICE Multi-Tech Assessments of existing product categories; National Product Information Management System; National Outcomes and Registries Programme, and reform of the Part IX Drug Tariff, which controls MedTech prescribed

David is also SRO for the Innovative Devices Access Pathway bringing together MHRA, NICE, NHSE and the Devolved Administrations to provide enhanced support for novel technology that meets an unmet need. David will be speaking about the DHSC/NHS Medical Technology Strategy and chairing the procurement conference. Procurement is vitally important to professional replacement planning for healthcare technology. David has also invited the following speakers
