keyboard, ensure the ultrasound machines are extremely portable, durable, and less prone to damage. This was extremely important as many of the portable units are transported between clinics. The long battery life was another key consideration for this point of care application – the units provide 90 minutes of scanning time, while an additional trolley-attached battery provides 120 minutes of extra scanning time.

The technology roll-out To support the technology rollout, Mindray installed a permanent, dedicated team in Scotland to ensure rapid customer service response times, including an account manager, clinical applications specialist and engineer. “I was thrilled to join the company at the start

of the project rollout, along with my colleagues Diane Murphy (Clinical Application Specialist) and Balal Tariq (Field Service Engineer). The opportunity of observing at the screening clinics has taught us so much. We’re looking forward to working closely with AAA Scotland and supporting them whenever we can,” said Claire Buchan, Account Manager, Ultrasound Scotland. Further support was provided through a combination of online training, instruction videos, and in-person training across all 14 health boards. “Mindray stood out as our preferred system

following a rigorous demonstration event. The machine is lightweight and compact, fulfilling our requirements as asked. The trolleys have been invaluable, freeing up other department trolleys for more appropriate use.

“The machine is very user friendly, and we

have received positive feedback on its usability and image quality. “The improved image has allowed clinics to

run more efficiently, while reducing the need for pressure. This is key to reducing the risk of repetitive strain injury in our screeners,” commented Karen Connelly, Lead Sonogapher, General Ultrasound, Ayrshire and Arran. Garrick Wagner, Senior Programme Manager with National Services Scotland, covering the AAA screening programme, stated: “Mindray have been very responsive to our requests. They have a small team, here in Scotland, and have given us an excellent service so far.” The screening programme is making a huge

difference to the lives of Scottish men and their families. According to Public Health Scotland’s performance data (published in March 2023), the total number of initial and surveillance scans completed in the year ending 31 March 2022 was 33,422 (recovering from 16,148 in the previous year, and 29,582 pre-pandemic). Despite some challenges during the pandemic, the programme has now returned to business as usual and is going strong. A large aneurysm was detected in 122 men resulting in a referral to vascular specialist services, and the majority of men were seen by a vascular specialist within two weeks (87.7%). Twelve men deemed appropriate for AAA repair surgery were operated on within eight weeks.3 “Mindray has had a long-standing relationship with the AAA screening programme already in England and we were extremely proud to

be selected as the chosen provider of our M8 Portable ultrasound systems for the national screening programme in Scotland,” commented Paul Johnston, National Sales Marketing Manager, at Mindray UK. “Our aim is to help screeners deliver the highest quality images, while using our ultrasound systems, which provide immediate answers and accurate guidance during the scans. The AAA screening programme saves countless lives in men over the age of 65 and Mindray are proud to be a part of this programme in the UK,” he concluded.
