NIHR
Increased UK investment is driving HealthTech development
With significant investment bolstering the UK’s HealthTech R&D sector, NIHR can help companies to navigate all that the UK has to offer.
With the need to accelerate the digitisation of the NHS, shifting care from the hospital to the community, and a focus on disease prevention and early detection, the opportunities for HealthTech in the UK are significant. Now is the time to conduct research in the
NHS with the National Institute of Health and Care Research’s (NHR) support, as significant new investment building on an established and coordinated research ecosystem is perfectly placed to accelerate the development of HealthTech. The recently announced Voluntary Scheme
for Branded Medicine Pricing, Access and Growth (VPAG) Investment Programme will allocate £300 million to expand the UK’s capacity and capability for commercial clinical trials, targeting investment across health technology assessment and manufacturing. This will help to establish at least 15 new Commercial Research Delivery Centres across the UK supported by the NIHR. This is in addition to the £42 million investment
by NIHR to commission 14 HealthTech Research Centres which are already supporting companies to evaluate new innovations in the UK market. Combined with an improved and standardised
approach through the National Contract Value Review (NCVR), costing and contracting for commercial research has sped up following the successful application to late phase studies in Autumn 2023. Its usage has increased study set up time by around a third, and has now expanded to ATMPs and early phase studies.
NIHR’s free tailored support expedites HealthTech development in the UK Navigating the UK’s vast research infrastructure is vital to accelerate timelines to gain approvals quickly. Funded by the UK Government, NIHR invests
over £1.4 billion annually in research, resources, expertise, dedicated research facilities, and data platforms, all of which can support the life science industry to accelerate innovations into the NHS. The NIHR connects industry with the UK’s
