INSTITUTE NEWS A ‘passion’ for the water treatment sector

One of the Institute’s newest recruits, associate member, Karina Jones MWMsoc, AIHEEM, a Water Hygiene Consultant at water treatment and engineering specialist, WCS Services, began her career in water management 10 years ago, and says it started ‘with the fascination and the need to know more about the characteristics of waterborne pathogens and the control of Legionella Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria in water systems’.

She explained: “It has always astonished me how a tiny bacterium can have such a huge impact on our health”. Of her career she added: “Working as a technician in my early years has provided me with the knowledge and the very necessary basic and valuable information on how hospitals work. It has also taught me what

information is helpful for Water Safety Groups to ensure that our actions meet the L8 Approved Code of Practice and Guidance on regulations, the Technical Guidance HSG 274 Part 2, and HTM 04-01.

“After leaving my home country of Poland and finishing my education in Vienna, I never thought back then that I would working within this industry. However, now that I have worked in the water hygiene sector, completed many courses, and had the pleasure of working with many fantastic people, my passion for the field has only grown further. “I have recently begun my new challenge of becoming an AE (Water), and having been accepted as associate member of IHEEM, I am looking forward to many more years in this industry. I would encourage all hard-working healthcare engineering and healthcare estates and facilities management personnel who share my enthusiasm to join the Institute and help make a difference. It can only work if we work together.”
