INSTITUTE NEWS

on ‘Designing through the lens of the UN Sustainable Design Goals’ (UNSDGs) – ‘a collection of 17 global goals set by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015 for the year 2030’. “The majority of the goals,” he explained, “have a direct impact on the work we do both in design and operational maintenance. As healthcare professionals we can interpret them to promote holistic sustainability strategies.” The presentation will highlight the 17goals, where possible provide alignment to current mainstream environmental assessment methodologies, and draw on case studies to highlight how they can be used.

Setting out membership benefits Just before lunch, IHEEM’s CEO, Pete Sellars, will give a presentation on IHEEM membership and its benefits, followed by a ‘Q&A’ session chaired by Eddie McLaughlan CEng MIHEEM, assistant director, Health Facilities Scotland. Over lunch, attendees will be able to network, and to visit exhibitors’ stands. In an early afternoon session, Eddie McLaughlan will focus on ‘Overheating of healthcare buildings’, and some potential strategies to mitigate against this, especially, if, as expected, the world continues to see annual rises in average temperature. A speaker yet to be confirmed will examine the predicted impact of climate change on power supplies and power costs, and ‘whether the NHS should be ‘concerned’.

Medical devices

Following a further ‘Q&A’ session and tea break, Parminder Bilkhu, head of Decontamination & Medical Equipment at Croydon Health Services NHS Trust, will look at how climate change and the resulting high temperatures might affect medical devices in hospitals. The final presentation, before closing remarks from IHEEM’s President, Ian Hinitt CEng, FIHEEM, will be given by Alan Fogarty BSc (Eng), Dip Eng, MA, Sustainability partner at Cundall. In an address entitled ‘Adapting healthcare buildings for climate change’, he will discuss the evidence relating to the future impacts of climate change on weather events, ‘and what this means locally to Wales’. He said: “I will discuss what this means for buildings in Wales, and consider the impacts – in terms of overheating, drought, and flooding, as well as the mitigation measures required.” IHEEM members can attend the conference for just £59 + VAT, NHS staff for £79 + VAT, and non-members for £149 + VAT. To book, telephone IHEEM on 023 9282 3186, email events@iheem.org.uk, or book online at www.iheem.org.uk/IHEEM- Regional-Conference.

The full conference programme and details on speakers can be accessed via the above web address.

Richard Nugent

Richard Nugent, best known as President of IHEEM (from 2004-2006), and chair of Sandwell Primary Care Trust in the West Midlands (from 2000-2011), died on 10 May aged 75, writes his son, Mark.

Born in the Rhondda Valley, he studied Architecture in Southend, and following graduation worked initially in private practice and local government, but it was to the NHS that he felt drawn, seeking to apply his skills in support of the service’s founding principles. In 1983 he was appointed senior lecturer at the NHS Training Centre at Eastwood Park. Although from an estates professional background, his aim throughout his time at the training establishment was to develop multi-professional working. Those drawn from all NHS disciplines who attended his ‘Mereworth’ course on strategic planning will long remember the skill and deep understanding that he brought to bear on developing each individual discipline. He considered teamwork, properly co-ordinated and tested – with analysis and challenge – essential. The role of the estates professional, which hitherto had been largely neglected, was emphasised. Following this teaching experience, he was appointed director of Estates at the West Midlands Regional Health Authority, becoming its director of Purchasing when it was reorganised in 1993. Following the dissolution of Regional Health Authorities, and with a degree in Law, he joined the Lewington Partnership, a firm specialising in providing legal advice to Health Authorities. In 1997 he set up his own architectural practice, and was responsible for several major hospital projects in the West Midlands Region, becoming project director for Birmingham Children’s Hospital when it relocated to Steelhouse Lane. In 2000 he was appointed chair of Sandwell PCT, and was subsequently involved with Sandwell and West Birmingham

Richard Nugent 1944-2019.

CCG until his retirement in June 2018. From the late 1990s Richard was closely involved in a professional forum, Architects for Health, drawing on his wealth of experience as a valued and respected speaker. In recent years he was co-opted to the organisation’s Executive, where he was pivotal in making much needed changes to the organisation.

Looking back on an eventful career, he became increasingly aware that the successful management of change depended on a clear but flexible strategy, and it was to that end that he devoted his career. The ‘big picture’, articulated in detail, was, he felt, key to success, and he was not one who squandered his intelligence on trivialities. A warm yet modest personality, Richard was a man of great integrity, intelligence, and fine judgment. He is survived by his widow, Margaret, son, Mark, and daughter, Rhiannon. His funeral was held at the Westerleigh Crematorium near Bristol on 28 May.
