Delivering a wider vision for the Trust Besides delivering rapid projects for the Trust, Tilbury Douglas is also the construction partner on the new Emergency Department at Walsall Manor Hospital. Tilbury Douglas Construction and Tilbury Douglas Engineering are now commencing the main build phase of a major new Emergency Department for Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust. The new £40 m development is set to significantly improve facilities and capacity, delivering 5,457 m2 provision.

one central destination for all patients and visitors. The design principles also aim to offer the Trust greater future flexibility, enabling it to increase the capacity of core areas depending on demand.


New ‘ED’


The new Walsall Manor Emergency Department incorporates a carefully planned reception, waiting, and triage area, that helps admissions to be prioritised and directed efficiently. Clinical spaces include an Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC); an ED Majors department, including Resus and Rapid Assessment and Treatment (RAT); a Paediatric Assessment and Treatment Unit; an Acute Medical Unit, and provision for Ambulatory Emergency Care in a future phase. Various specialist facilities are located throughout, such as an isolation room for infectious patients, bariatric provision, and X-ray rooms.


All areas have been designed specifically to enhance medical staff efficiency, productivity, and quality of care, to improve the staff and patient experience.


Built adjacent to the existing A&E provision, the existing building will also be reconfigured and refurbished to provide additional support space for the hospital and staff on completion of the new build. The project will be delivered to BREEAM ‘Excellent’ standards, helping the Trust deliver on its long-term sustainability agenda.


Tilbury Douglas’s Contract manager, Richard Myatt, said: “We’ve been working on the development and enabling works for this project for over a year now. It’s a game-changing project for the Trust, so we are looking forward to getting moving with the main building, and giving the stakeholders some visible progress.” Senior Quantity surveyor, Tim de Torre, echoed his sentiments, adding: “We also have an experienced local supply chain engaged on the project, so the finished product will be a real testament to the brilliant skills and suppliers that we have here in the West Midlands.”


The project is due to complete in the Autumn of next year.
