SPONSORED BY HEALTH SECTOR NEWS Concerted action on climate change vital

Scientists are observing changes in the Earth’s climate in every region and across the whole climate system, the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report reveals, with many of the changes observed ‘unprecedented in thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of years’, Indeed, says Climate Change 2021: the Physical Science Basis, published on 9 August, some of the changes already set in motion – such as continued sea level rise – are ‘irreversible over hundreds to thousands of years’. However, the scientists say, ‘strong and sustained reductions’ in emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases would ‘limit climate change’.

Hoesung Lee, Chair of the IPCC (pictured), said: “The innovations in this report, and advances in climate science it

reflects, provide an invaluable input into climate negotiations and decision-making.” The report provides new estimates of the chances of crossing the global warming level of 1.5˚C in the next decades, and finds that without ‘immediate, rapid, and large-scale reductions in greenhouse gas emissions’, limiting warming to close to 1.5˚C or even 2˚C will be ‘beyond reach’.

The report projects that in the coming decades climate changes will increase in all regions. For 1.5˚C of global warming, there will be increasing heatwaves, longer warm seasons, and shorter cold seasons. At 2˚C of global warming, heat extremes would more often reach ‘critical tolerance thresholds’ for agriculture and health. The IPCC said: “But it is not just about temperature. Climate change is bringing multiple different changes in different

regions – which will all increase with further warming. These include changes to wetness and dryness, to winds, snow and ice, coastal areas, and oceans.” The report says ‘human actions still have the potential to determine the future course of climate’, adding that ‘the evidence is clear that carbon dioxide is the main driver of climate change’.

Fire detection upgrade completed at Wycombe hospital control panels and devices

Fitting a new life safety system to any public space can be complex, but when doing this work in a hospital, during a

pandemic, the complexity increases tenfold.

When Pyrotec Fire and Security was chosen as the contractor to update the fire detection system at Wycombe Hospital in High Wycombe, Hochiki was selected to supply a replacement system. Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust wanted an existing network of obsolete

replaced. The hospital was fitted with a network of 26 control panels, pre- programmed off site. Loop by loop, each fire zone had old devices switched out

and replaced with Hochiki’s ESP Intelligent range of addressable fire detection and alarm equipment, which it says is designed and manufactured ‘to the highest international standards’, and offers an adjustable sensor solution to reduce false alarms. Hochiki said: “What made our

products the standout choice for this project, however, is their compatibility with other brands’ control panels.” Justyn Soames, lead project manager, said: “When you are working in a hospital it is vital to carefully manage the job to ensure no loss of old or new fire alarm system coverage. It is thus imperative to work with systems and devices that are simple to fit and test. Hochiki life safety devices were chosen because they are incredibly simple to fit, and the technology is highly flexible and compatible with other systems.”
