HEALTH SECTOR NEWS Academy diversity programme –strong results


An award-winning Royal Academy of Engineering programme to boost the employment prospects of engineering graduates from diverse backgrounds has resulted in at least 250 engineering employment opportunities over the last five years.


These opportunities include internships, graduate placements, and jobs, according to figures published on 27 July. The Graduate Engineering Engagement Programme (GEEP) targets university engineering students, and has reached over 800 students from 66 universities since its 2015 launch. Of the students already involved in the programme, 28% are female, and over 90% are from BAME backgrounds.


The Academy has collaborated with over a dozen leading engineering employers to provide students with training and networking opportunities that it says will help and encourage them to apply for engineering jobs. The programme launched for its sixth year last month. These will include workshops, interview and assessment centre training,


and ‘insight sessions’ led by engineers. Each event also includes a speed networking session for students to meet engineering recruiters. Companies currently confirmed to support the scheme this year include AMEY, Buro Happold, National Grid, Network Rail, Rolls-Royce, Siemens, Teledyne e2v, and WSP.


GEEP has been developed in partnership with engineering employers, and is delivered by SEO London, with support from the Association for Black and Minority Ethnic Engineers (AfBE-UK) and the Women’s Engineering Society (WES). The programme targets engineering undergraduates who are female or from socially disadvantaged or BAME backgrounds, with a focus on universities outside the Russell Group. Designed with ‘build efficiency’ in mind Static Systems Group (SSG) says its


new Inseta Headwall flush-fitting bedhead services trunking for healthcare environments has been designed ‘with build efficiency in mind’, making it suitable for both fast-track new-build and refurbishment projects. Inseta enables any combination and type of gas outlet, medical, electrical and communications equipment, to be accommodated at any position. Units come in three standard widths for flush mounting – 450 mm, 600 mm, and 900 mm, but if customers have a non- standard build requirement, SSG’s specialist bedhead services design engineers will work to accommodate it. Matching surface-mounted units are also available, as are LED wall-mounted luminaires with a complementary profile. Inseta units are supplied in white, with alternative colours and finishes available by special order.


Inseta has been designed for offsite construction. Once manufactured, the headwalls are supplied fully assembled ready for mounting, with all cabling and piping already installed and tested, and the front plates in position. The units arrive on site tested and certified in line with current standards, and can optionally be fitted with modular wired connectors. Alternatively, the frame

Specialist consultancy, ETL, has appointed Jonathan French managing director and executive director of Client Services. He brings strengths in business strategy, operational improvement, and business development. Building on ETL’s prominence in its existing market sectors, he will also help drive the consultancy’s expansion across the UK and overseas. He said: “I am thrilled to have been invited to join the ETL team. I hope my skills and experience can assist in shaping the business as it adapts to an unknown but exciting post-COVID-19 future.”


A qualified architect, and the holder of a Masters’ Degree in Business, Jonathan French has had several significant leadership roles with other consultancies, including EC Harris and Arup. Most recently, he was an executive Board member of Woods Bagot PTY, the Australian-registered global practice, where he was also regional chairman Middle East.


His appointment is part of a strategy to reshape the executive team roles across three functional areas, with David Philliskirk as executive director of Commercial & Performance, and Tina Nolan executive director of Service Development.
