Delabie’s new mechanical mixer puts patient safety first
Patient wellbeing is the primary driver behind the development of the new sequential mechanical mixer from Delabie, the sanitaryware and water controls specialist says.
The design brief focused on anti- scalding safety, infection control, and ergonomics, so the new 2640P mixer meets the challenges faced by healthcare facilities.
Anti-scalding safety Delabie’s new wall-mounted 2640P mixer is ‘ideal for medical environments’. Its single sequential control lever operates through a range of 70˚, opening with cold, potable water only, and adjusting the temperature to a maximum pre-set limit to reduce the scalding risk. The mixer body has thermal insulation – hot water flows from the inlets to the ceramic cartridge inside

Welcome to the October issue of Health Estate Journal, published as the biggest ever ‘live’ Healthcare Estates conference and exhibition opens in Manchester. With high-profile conference speakers, a focus on four of the key areas for healthcare engineering and estate management personnel – Engineering & Facilities, Net Zero, Strategic & Capital Planning, and Workforce – in this year’s conference streams, an exhibition featuring well over 200 exhibitors, and the annual IHEEM awards dinner – where guest speakers will include the most capped female hockey player in English history, and one of rugby union’s most distinguished former referees – Healthcare Estates 2022 should be a great event. Tis year there is a special ‘Members’ Lounge’
(see page 7), while show visitors will also be very welcome to come along and meet the HEJ team, on stand H54. We look forward to seeing many of you in Manchester. Tis issue of HEJ is the year’s biggest to date,
narrow tubes which have no contact with the mixer’s exterior surface. The mixer body remains at an ambient temperature, so any risk of scalding and burning is removed. However, thermal shocks are possible by simply pressing the red button behind the mixer’s control lever to override the limiter and deliver the hot water temperature in the system.
Maximum hygiene
The 2640P sequential mechanical mixer has been designed to reduce the volume of standing water in the body. Fewer components are in contact with the water, limiting biofilm attachment. Its internal design prevents the water from coming into contact with chrome, nickel or lead, maintaining water quality. In addition, the mixer is fitted with a BIOSAFE free-flow outlet. Made from Hostaform, its smooth surface prevents water retention or scale build-up, reducing the risk of bacterial contamination.
Comfort and ergonomics
Equipped with a sequential cartridge, the 2640P mixer opens and closes with a single movement for improved ergonomics. The Hygiene control lever can be operated by the wrist, forearm, or elbow, to avoid manual contact, and the increased spout length guarantees optimised hand washing. The swivelling spout can be fixed in place easily by tightening the screw at the rear of the spout.

with subject matter ranging from the importance of regular fire damper safety testing, and managing the risk of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in hospital water systems, to tips for estates managers dealing with PFI handback. An article from IHEEM AE (D) Brian Kirk on pages 35-39 explains the importance of using validated sterilisation processes to produce sterile single or multi-use medical devices such as re-usable metal surgical instruments, and the internationally agreed standards covering the sterilisation process and steriliser equipment. Other topics covered include the healthcare estate’s role in addressing inequalities, the need for ‘flexible’ primary care buildings in the light of lessons during the pandemic, and delivering the optimal lighting for clinical and non-clinical settings. Te Institute News focuses both on the new
Members’ Lounge at Healthcare Estates, and on a recent new IHEEM member with an interesting background – having previously worked as a deep sea fisherman on North Sea trawlers, he later spent 15 years in the Royal Horse Artillery as a Bombardier. His expertise in water hygiene and safety – he is now a consultant and trainer – was gained both in the Army, and during a subsequent spell with GE Power and Water, advising on industrial water systems – a great illustration of how diverse a background IHEEM’s members have.
