IHEEM announces Big Bang Fair support at Healthcare Estates

The opening keynote speakers at this year’s Healthcare Estates conference last month included Dr Hilary Leevers, Chief Executive of EngineeringUK, the non-profit body responsible for working with hundreds of organisations to support the growth and diversity of the future engineering talent pool. In her address, Dr Leevers highlighted the range of activity undertaken by EngineeringUK to inspire and support students, educators, and youth organisations in engineering fields, and address the imbalances in engagement seen across gender and socioeconomic background. In concluding the keynotes and his welcoming address to conference delegates, IHEEM CEO, Pete Sellars, announced the Institute’s

plans to support EngineeringUK’s annual Big Bang Fair for 2025, both by exhibiting at the event, and sponsoring a new national award as part of the Big Bang Competition. The IHEEM Innovation in Wellbeing and Healthcare

Engineering Award was officially launched, with Pete Sellars noting that wellbeing affects all stakeholders in the healthcare community. He said: “We are inviting young people from around the country to present innovative engineering solutions which will improve a part of the system for staff, visitors and, most importantly, our patients.” On the partnership between the Institute and EngineeringUK on the initiative, and IHEEM’s plans to optimise engagement and support delivery of the event, he added: “I am delighted that EngineeringUK and IHEEM are jointly announcing the programme this year. It’s a fantastic opportunity, and this is a plea from me to our members and our branches to work with and join us on this programme.”

First Innovation in Healthcare Conference

Adding a further valuable conference to its extensive annual events schedule, September 2024 saw the Institute present the inaugural IHEEM Innovation in Healthcare Conference and Exhibition, in partnership with East Midlands Branch, at Uttoxeter Racecourse. The one-day event hosted leaders and innovators from the healthcare engineering disciplines, who shared insight and projections on the future of smart solutions and

utilising cutting-edge technologies to the benefit of all healthcare user- groups. The well-received event has been commended for the quality of speakers and topics explored, including artificial intelligence, smart lighting devices, geothermal heating solutions, chemical-free water treatments, and both ventilation and battery storage systems.

The Institute looks forward to building further on this event in 2025, and to supporting members
