ELECTRICAL INFRASTRUCTURE

hospital to go to Crown House Technologies, part of Laing O’Rourke. Bender UK had worked with Crown House Technologies before on major hospital projects, but this was a step up in scale, and the company was determined to embrace the innovative approach of the project team. Each of the component parts of the overall £2 m plus order was subject to separate bidding procedures, and it is a measure of the relationship between Crown House Technologies and Bender UK that the company was chosen to deliver so many associated elements of these vital facilities.

Dedicated project manager One of the key actions from Bender was to appoint a dedicated person to manage the project on site – a role almost custom- made for electrical engineer, Lee Williams, whose home is less than two miles away from the new hospital, and who has lived and breathed the project for more than two years. He has overseen delivery, installation, and commissioning of the equipment, and is particularly proud to have been part of the team that helped to deliver early access to 350 beds at the hospital in April, to provide extra regional capacity for COVID-19 patients. He said: “Meeting that emergency requirement for the Health Board was a real team effort by everyone involved in the project, and it inevitably involved working extra hours and weekends to ensure that the beds were ready for use by the end of April. However, that’s not an unusual scenario for Bender UK, because we are frequently involved in working outside normal hours – both for installation and regular maintenance – to enable healthcare facilities, including operating theatres and intensive care units, to operate as normal, without interruption to the vital patient services they provide.”

Indeed, Bender UK currently supports over 400 hospitals in the UK and Ireland, and offers the benefit of our wealth of experience and expertise in providing safe and resilient critical power solutions, alongside advanced clinical equipment for operating theatres and high dependency units.

Fully certified rapid changeover solution

ATICS is the only fully certified Safety Integrity Level (SIL) 2 rapid changeover solution for medical applications with patient safety at the very core of its conception and development. Central to its design is the incorporation of permanent self-testing across all critical components – a key differentiator over other systems on the market that are susceptible to failure without prior warning.

We worked hard to win the contract award from Crown House Technologies, and have worked closely with the delivery team to ensure smooth delivery and commissioning of the equipment. We are particularly proud to be part of the response to deliver 350 beds early at the request of the Health Board.

‘Seamless continuity’ evident The ‘seamless continuity’ between Bender UK and its partners has been evident throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, during which the company has played a vital role in extending and maintaining care facilities. We were contacted to help with the urgent Nightingale projects, and were the ‘go-to company’ asked to deliver critical care power systems of huge magnitude in very tight timescales when the pandemic was in its rapidly evolving stages.

At Grange University Hospital, Bender UK has supplied, installed, and commissioned, ultra-safe and resilient medical IT systems/IPS (Isolated Power Supply) and UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) systems serving critical Group 2 areas including operating theatres and intensive and critical care units. In total Bender installed, delivered, and commissioned, 65 medical IT/IPS 10 kVA power distribution boards for specialist circuits with isolation transformers and monitoring systems integral to the unit. Bender UK’s team worked closely with Arup on the medical IT power installation, extending its involvement to take total responsibility for building the panels, shipping them to site, installing them, and handling all the connections to the main critical care electrical system. The Grange Hospital critical power installation includes Bender’s unique ATICS auto-changeover device technology within each of 65 medical IT distribution panels. Operating in conjunction with the UPS fail-safe battery

Provision of resilient Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems required the supply, delivery, and commissioning of two 80 kVA N+1 UPS systems, along with one 400 kVA UPS system and one 500 kVA UPS system.

Clinical pendants delivering medical gases, Group 2 power, and data connections to the bedside or operating table are a vital part of the care infrastructure. At The Grange University Hospital, Bender UK supplied, installed, and commissioned 75 tandem multimovement pendants, and more than 40 single multimovement pendants. Sixteen Bender-manufactured touchscreen panels were installed in the 11 operating theatres, in two maternity delivery suites, and in critical care areas. The panels enable staff to exercise safe control of the theatre environment through an ergonomic single point of reference, even when wearing surgical gloves, and each panel incorporates a flush finish easy-clean touchscreen.

Choosing a theatre light Bender UK’s National Clinical Sales consultant, Steve Coleman, led the proposal for the clinical lighting required by the Grange University Hospital. He arranged demonstrations for clinical and theatre staff of the Merivaara Q-Flow theatre lights with 4K digital cameras integrated into the lights, and for the smaller inspection lights used in both treatment and diagnostic areas. A Merivaara Q4 surgical light configuration with integrated 4K camera was installed and commissioned in each of the operating theatres, and almost 200 of the smaller LED examination lights were installed throughout the hospital. Bender UK is the exclusive supplier of innovative Merivaara Q-Flow LED lighting for hospitals and clinics in Britain and the Republic of Ireland. The company has supplied and installed hundreds of the advanced performance surgical lighting systems either ‘standalone’, or as part of its turnkey operating theatre installation service.
