VENTILATION SYSTEMS
The Halton system was chosen to maximise safety, flexibility, and personal wellbeing.
the ‘sweeping action’ is often poor. Obstacles in the ceiling above the patient, such as the operating lamps for example, disturb the flow of clean air. The result is a turbulent air pattern.”
In 2011, when the new Karolinska building was designed, the type of surgeries to be performed and the type of ceiling-mounted equipment installed were unknown, so the solution needed to have the flexibility to accommodate a wide range of requirements, as well as being future-proof. The Halton turbulent mixing system was selected for its ability to meet these demands, as well as freeing space above the patient and the operating table.
The solution is based on a controlled dilution principle – the air is delivered to the whole space (with the largest amount directed to the central area) to ensure that the whole room stays at an ultra-
clean level. Ceiling-mounted diffusers take up part of the ceiling around the critical area, but leave maximum space for medical technology. Designed to ensure as much space as possible inside the OR, as well as low noise levels, the whole unit is just 45 cm high and 60 cm wide.
How was the solution chosen? The process had few stages, and the very first was to take into account end-user demands – flexibility, medical procedure priority, and the need to ensure an ultra- clean level in the whole room. Silence was also an important issue. Proposed solutions were evaluated by the project team, including pre-validation by simulated operations in a demo room. Later on, new build rooms were also validated by simulated operations. Ultimately, the ventilation system enables an ideal and adjustable work
