TRAINING & SKILLS
teams to become a highly informed client at all levels, and provides the foundation for a true partnership of co-development. As a result of this training partnership, NHS teams understand the language spoken by design teams, contractors, and engineers. They also understand how to harness opportunities to enhance the environment, coupled with the importance of transformation, and how the built environment can support new opportunities to improve clinical care and provide an enhanced environment for patients, staff, and visitors. From a standing start in October
2022 to date we have trained over 150 NHS colleagues from more than 10 NHS Trusts, surpassing our year one ambition and plan by a huge margin. We have galvanised the free support of over 50 industry professionals, all of whom are enthusiastically willing to be a part of our knowledge-sharing mission.
CPD-accredited courses All of our courses are CPD accredited, which helps to enhance the careers and continuous learning objectives of NHS colleagues. The learning we have provided has not stopped at an individual level, with delegates sharing and cascading their learning across their organisation and teams. Among the feedback which we have received from participants are the following comments: “All clinicians of all grades should be
encouraged to attend.” “Anyone who is interested in being
involved in the process should definitely attend.”
“I think learning from all this wealth of
experience about what not to do and what to consider is essential.”
Kate Bradley and Healthcare Design Leadership CIC
Kate Bradley is a founding member, director, and faculty leader at Healthcare Design Leadership (CIC) a not-for- profit organisation which aims to provide training to empower NHS and public healthcare providers to maximise their input in the hospital development process. Also associate director of Healthcare Planning with MJ Medical, and with over 20 years’ healthcare sector experience, Kate has managed a wide range of major capital development projects for healthcare providers – including delivering health planning services from the early concept stages of a project through to commissioning and occupation. Her specific areas of expertise include briefing and business case development, operational policies, capacity modelling, and operational commissioning of premises. She has a keen eye for detail, and understands the process of designing and procuring healthcare buildings. Healthcare Design Leadership CIC is a not-for-profit community interest company providing training on healthcare facility design and development to NHS personnel. A collaboration between healthcare planner, MJ Medical, specialist healthcare architects, Llewelyn Davies, and Professor Ashok Handa, Professor of Vascular Surgery and Director of Teaching in Surgery at the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences at the University of Oxford, Healthcare Design Leadership aims to provide NHS personnel with the skills, knowledge, and tools to maximise the value and impact of their participation in capital development projects, helping NHS Trusts become ‘an informed client’ at all levels.
Wendy James, Senior Healthcare planner from Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, said: “The Healthcare Design Leadership team worked with us to assemble a bespoke curriculum that was extremely well received. The sessions were comprehensive, and feedback indicates they have given our staff the knowledge they need to work effectively with design teams, and hit the ground running once our new
hospital project gets underway.” 100% of the delegates stated they
would recommend the course to colleagues from the NHS. Given the slow timeline for development projects in healthcare, the true benefits of this training may not be seen for years to come. However, the benefits to individuals, and their engagement in the healthcare development process, can be immediate.
