Design practice appointed for London’s ‘pioneering’ Fleming Centre
Following a RIBA competition, a team from London-based design studio, Stanton Williams, has been selected to design the Fleming Centre – a ‘pioneering’ research and public engagement facility to be built on the St Mary’s Hospital campus in Paddington, London. Part of the wider Fleming Initiative
established jointly by Imperial College Healthcare and Imperial College London, the practice says it will provide ‘a flexible space to unite researchers, policymakers, clinicians, behavioural experts, commercial partners, and the public in the fight against antimicrobial resistance’. Stanton Williams said: “Adapting
and re-using Paddington’s historic canalside industrial warehouses, known as The Bays, our design proposes to build on the past to look to the future – both in terms of its physical context and – intellectually – the pioneering work of Alexander
Fleming. The building seeks to break down disciplinary silos to encourage the exchange and interaction that underpins the creation of new ideas. The ground floor is conceived as an open and welcoming extension of the public realm, offering views into laboratories and curated exhibition spaces to draw the public into the heart of the building, and engage them with its activities. “It’s a privilege to be working with
Graham wins £39 m contract for Belfast iREACH facility
Queen’s University Belfast has awarded Graham a £39 m construction contract to build two new ‘state-of-the-art’ buildings beside the Belfast City Hospital as part of the planned 8,500 m2
Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust on this globally significant project, which aims to become a global beacon for change in healthcare, and ‘put science on show’, demystifying critical research to celebrate and encourage participation in the vital, but often unseen, work of researchers and clinicians.” The project’s next phase will involve detailed design development, public consultations, and the submission of a
planning application in collaboration with Westminster City Council. The architects’ selection follows a competitive RIBA design competition and a three-day design exhibition last November, which showcased five concept designs from five shortlisted architects. RIBA explained: “Feedback from over 300 visitors and 100 written responses helped guide the final selection.” The Fleming Centre is intended to be integrated into a full redevelopment of St Mary’s Hospital, which is included in the Government’s New Hospital Programme, and is due to open in 2028, marking 100 years since Sir Alexander Fleming’s discovery of penicillin at St Mary’s. Stanton Williams’ appointment to design the Fleming Centre is supported by the following design team members: n Civil and structural engineering: Ove Arup & Partners.
n Mechanical and electrical engineering (MEP), BREEAM, and fire consultancy: Ramboll.
n Project and cost management consultants: CPC Project Services.
n Town planning consultant: Montagu Evans.

iREACH
Health facility. iREACH Health, a £64 m
integrated clinical research ‘innovation centre’ led by the University, will be developed in partnership with Belfast Health and Social Care Trust and Health and Social Care Research and Development Division. Queen’s University Belfast
says the new facility ‘will make clinical trials more effective, efficient, and interconnected, while supporting the improved health of the population’. Over the project’s lifetime, it is estimated that iREACH Health will provide over 1000 new, permanent jobs, and over £750 m in additional GDP for the region. Professor Sir Ian Greer, President and Vice-Chancellor of Queen’s
University, said: “This new facility will enable ground-breaking clinical trial capability, and ensure Northern Ireland remains at the forefront of life and health sciences, addressing some of the most pressing health challenges of our time.” Construction began in December, and iREACH plans to be operating from the new facilities by 2026. Kier has completed a new surgical centre at NHS Golden Jubilee in Clydebank (see photo), increasing the hospital’s patient capacity, and enabling the treatment of thousands of people waiting to access important care and procedures. Scottish First Minister, John
Swinney, visited the project to open the centre. Kier, which has built the surgical centre on behalf of NHS Golden Jubilee, worked closely with the hospital and the Scottish Government ‘to deliver a range of first-class facilities that will help the hospital meet the growing demand for key elective specialties’. Kier said: “The centre was developed with input from patients and staff, and enhances the hospital’s capacity for general and orthopaedic surgery, diagnostic procedures, and endoscopy. It will also increase staff training opportunities.” The new facilities include

procedure rooms – two equipped with specialist training equipment for the NHS Scotland Academy, plus an endoscopy decontamination unit. Modern Methods of Construction
were used to deliver the project. Phil McDowell, Regional director at Kier Construction North & Scotland, said: “This state-of-the-art facility represents a significant leap forward in Scotland’s healthcare infrastructure, helping to meet the growing demand for key elective specialties. The collaboration between NHS Golden Jubilee, Kier, and the Scottish Government, has been fantastic.” The project was procured through
Frameworks Scotland 2, and is the second phase of the Golden Jubilee’s expansion plans. During the first, Kier delivered a new eye centre, which began treating patients in November 2020.
