enjoy use of numerous print resources, the secure and confidential MyIHEEM Mentor recording system online, and Head Office partnership and agreement support. There are also plans in progress for 2025 to further develop the MyIHEEM platform, allowing users to self-select mentors and establish partnerships digitally.


Mentor delivery


Institute support of its mentor-mentee partnerships after each has been established is available as required, with all records between mentor and mentee remaining entirely confidential. This structure is left purposefully flexible and free for each mentor and mentee to establish their own agreement, ways of working, and mentoring objectives. As Jason Fisher notes: “The mentor does not necessarily have to be part of the mentee’s own organisation. While I am continuously mentoring engineers from my own practice, I am also currently mentoring several from across the UK, who have not been able to identify a suitable, willing, and capable mentor from their own organisation. Thanks to Teams and Zoom this is completely workable, and can be as beneficial as face-to-face mentoring. “Becoming a mentor can also contribute


to CPD and your own professional development, and if you do decide that mentoring is for you, IHEEM will support you all the way, through comprehensive training, support, and the IHEEM web- based platform. “Being a mentor is an extremely beneficial and rewarding role, and mentees all have very different aims and

The Institute is accepting rolling applications from members looking to become an IHEEM Mentor, or those seeking mentorship via the programme, and future training dates for IHEEM Mentors will be publicised to all members in due course. many things to many people, but certainly not a one size fits all.’ “A benefit not to be overlooked in engaging with a mentoring role via the Institute is that to the mentor – via their own personal and professional development.”


Jason Fisher concludes: “I would emphasise that becoming a mentor may well be one of the greatest roles you could ever take on, and you will be making a really significant and positive contribution to the development of the engineers of the future.
