found value in attending the IHEEM Mentor training, as he explained: “Having mentored several engineers in my own building services consultancy practice over the past couple of decades, and more recently been formally involved in mentoring within my other professional engineering institutions, I felt the time was right to become involved as an IHEEM mentor. So, I signed up for the


mentoring training delivered by IHEEEM in Birmingham on 8 November 2024.

delivered’ “The training was interesting, informative, and superbly delivered by Steven Palmer, assisted by Zanna Mercer, with the attendees representing a broad cross- section of IHEEM members, from various technical engineering specialities and backgrounds from across the UK. “Despite having received formal training on mentoring a few years ago, I still came away from the training day with an update on mentoring best practice, and learnt several new skills and techniques to employ as a mentor. Registered Authorising Engineer (Water), Bill Millar, who also attended, recounts a little of his career development, what drew him to mentoring, and his experience of the IHEEM Mentor training. He said: “Originally a Junior Marine Engineering Officer with BP on large sea-going oil tankers, I joined the NHS in 1974 as an Assistant Hospital Engineer. At the start of my NHS career, I did not receive any induction or training – it was learning on the job! I stayed in the NHS for over 40 years. “Having undertaken further study

over the years, I joined IHEEM in 1991, which enabled me to become a Chartered Mechanical Engineer in 2001. I received informal mentoring through the IHEEM East Midlands Branch, which was really beneficial. I have always, throughout my NHS career, taken a real interest in helping the staff who have shown an interest in progressing their careers, supporting them with sharing ideas, advice, or arranging work experience. There were no mentoring rules in place, and the process was informal – often meeting up over a coffee or after work, but I was pleased to see those I mentored progress their careers.
