Developing trust is critical to creating an environment in which mentor and mentee can work effectively together, and encouraging clarity around what can be offered – and what is -- only serves, positively, to encourage authenticity and productiveness in the long term.


Barriers and benefits


There is potential, notably from organisational or senior managerial standpoints, for mentoring to be viewed as being beneficial solely, or at least primarily, to a given mentee. We might in turn regard this as a contributing factor to the reluctance of employers to invest the time and financial resources required to support mentoring relationships. Barriers to establishing mentoring relationships or a wider culture can extend beyond the reservations of senior leadership.


Almost by definition, effective mentoring requires the mentee to be vulnerable in accepting knowledge gaps, and a need or want for personal or professional development. The time commitment and buy- in from individuals should ideally also remain consistent and genuine respectively to yield the greatest results. However, the net positives to the mentee and mentor, but also the wider team, business objectives, and clients, are crucial to consider for an objective appraisal of the value of an engaged, wholesale mentoring culture. Some examples of the myriad benefits to be gained from a commitment to mentoring within an organisation can be seen above.


The Mentor/Mentee relationship


Central to establishing trust and positive intention within any mentor-mentee relationship is contracting. While this may
